Anticipatory smooth eye movements (aSEM) have been observed in primates when the temporal and kinematic properties of a forthcoming visual moving target are fully or partially predictable.

Materials and Methods Animals Two male, adult rhesus monkeys (No, Pe) were used in the present study. On each animal, a surgical procedure was performed under isoflurane anesthesia. A Teflon-coated three-turn magnetic search coil (catalog #AS 632, Cooner Wire) was sutured to the sclera under the conjunctiva of one eye (Fuchs and Robinson, 1966; Judge et al., 1980) to measure the orientation of gaze (eye-in-space) with the electromagnetic search-coil technique (Skalar; Robinson, 1963).
