1. Introduction Growing global awareness of the environmental impacts of combustion is accelerating electric vehicle (EV) adoption; over 50% of the global EV sales─a total of 1.98 million─in 2018 were in China. (1) However, in China, where coal-fired power generation has been the backbone of the electricity supply, vehicle electrification offers clear national energy security benefits but unclear climate and air quality benefits.

Abstract Responses to the COVID-19 outbreak resulted in one of the largest short-term decreases in anthropogenic emissions in modern history. To date, there has been no comprehensive assessment of the impact of lockdowns on air quality and human health.
