1 INTRODUCTION This paper presents a discussion on culinary capital and school mealtime. Food studies should be more engaged in social theory and this paper presents an extension following the work of Neuman (2018). The focus is on bridging the disciplinary gap between education and food studies. Research which focuses on the social aspect of food in school continues to grow but only limited to the globalised North (Lalli, 2023); or at least is only much more reported on in the global North.

1 INTRODUCTION While there is an ongoing dialogue in qualitative research exploring positionality and reflexivity, little research explores how they intersect with shaping the methodological decisions of doctoral researchers exploring teachers work, especially before going into the field. This methodological paper aims to address this gap, by examining the critical incidents that have come to shape a doctoral study in progress.
