Structured illumination microscopy (SIM) enables resolution enhancement beyond the diffraction limit by encoding high spatial frequencies into the system passband through patterned illumination. However, its temporal resolution is fundamentally constrained by the requirement to acquire multiple phase-shifted images for each illumination frequency and orientation.

Abstract The study of van der Waals heterostructures with an interlayer twist, known as twistronics, has been instrumental in advancing the understanding of many strongly correlated phases, many of which derive from the topology of the physical system. Here we explore the application of the twistronics paradigm in plasmonic systems with a non-trivial topology by creating a moiré skyrmion superlattice using two superimposed plasmonic skyrmion lattices with a relative twist.

Editor’s summary The symmetry and topology of physical systems are closely related to the symmetries governing the topological properties. Quasicrystals are ordered systems but have no translation or rotational symmetries. Theoretical work has shown that quasicrystals can be understood as the projection of a higher-dimensional crystal onto a lower-dimensional space. Tsesses et al. developed a plasmonic-based system in which to study the implications of that projection for topological invariants.
