On a warm, still morning off Big Hill Road, high above Columbia and downtown Sonora, a family sought painful answers about a loved one who was last seen more than 15 years ago. Sonora residents Sandy Lee, 66, Darvis Lee Sr., 74, and Jake Lee, 27, were grim witnesses looking for remains of Darvis Beuford Lee Jr., who was 36 years old when he was last seen alive in October 2010. Sandy and Darvis Sr. are Darvis Jr.’s parents and Jake is Darvis Jr.’s brother.

Groveland-area nonprofit organizes mural celebrating America’s 250th birthday

Community boosters in Big Oak Flat and Groveland recently organized the creation of a 65-foot-wide, 9-foot-tall mural to celebrate America’s 250th birthday and unveiled it last Saturday on the Wards Ferry Road side of Around the Horn Brewing Co. Board members for the Grade to Gate Foundation, a Groveland-based nonprofit formed more than one year ago, came up with the idea, coordinated with local artists and created one of the mural’s panels.

Sonora woman gets 16+ years in prison for car chase, assaulting officer

A 63-year-old Sonora woman, Brenda Lee Devries, was sentenced to a stipulated term of 16 years and four months in state prison on Monday, after she pleaded guilty June 16 to assault on a peace officer, recklessly fleeing a pursuing peace officer, and driving under the influence of a drug in connection with a Dec. 8 pursuit that ended at the 76 gas station in Jamestown.
