The Press Club of Atlantic City, N.J., recognized The Sun of San Bernardino, Calif., for Unnatural Disasters, a fire-flood series addressing land use, hazard history, and the events of October and December 2003. From Scripps Howard National Journalism Awards: "Honors outstanding environmental reporting. Award is given to encourage journalists to help educate the public and public officials on environmental issues." The devastating Old Fire in October 2003 was followed by deadly post-fire floods on Christmas Day 2003. My contributions helped The Sun earn recognition for the fire-flood series Unnatural Disasters. Administered by First Amendment Funding Inc. in Arizona, Best of the West judges recognized Press-Enterprise staff for their Oct. 30, 2003 coverage of the destructive Old Fire.
