By Guy Williams for the Otago Daily Times It will cost $40 for a car, truck or motorcycle to head in to a historic Otago goldmining ghost town from the end of this month - although Queenstown-Lakes residents can get an annual pass for $100. After an 18-month project to keep the road into Macetown open, representatives of 10 organisations signed a memorandum of understanding late last year to finalise the system.

Man charged over head-on collision: police

A NELSON man responsible for a head-on crash near Queenstown at the weekend had a breath-alcohol level more than four times the legal limit, police say. Queenstown police area response manager Senior Sergeant Glenn Wilkinson said the 43-year-old had been driving on the wrong side of the road for some time before his vehicle collided with another containing two Australian tourists on Saturday.

By Guy Williams of A skilled Queenstown kayaker drowned after becoming caught in a river hazard resembling a ''washing machine'', a coroner says. In findings released on Friday, coroner Amelia Steel said Jeremy Norbury, 24, died on 25 February in 2023, while kayaking with friends in South Westland's Turnbull River. After leaving Queenstown early that morning, the group reached the river about 1pm after carrying their kayaks for about an hour.
