ISASecure Certification benefits
Courtesy: Brett Sayles The certification issued by an ISASecure Accredited Certification Body is the highest global recognition for cybersecurity-related products and demonstrates that the applicable ISA/IEC 62443 requirements have been met throughout the whole lifecycle. Why obtain the ISASecure Certification? The benefits of ISASecure certification are many.
What is ISASecure certification?
Courtesy: Brett Sayles ISASecure certification is a third-party conformity assessment scheme based on the ISA/IEC 62443 series of standards aimed at cybersecurity certification of industrial automation and control systems (IACS), such as distributed control systems (DCS) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA). A third-party conformity assessment scheme is also known as a certification scheme.
Structure of IEC 62443
IEC 62443 is the international reference standard for industrial cybersecurity of components and systems developed in conformity with ISA/IEC requirements. IEC 62443 family of standards The most relevant parts of IEC 62443, for the development of secure products throughout the entire lifecycle, and in order to obtain the ISASecureCertification as well, are: Part 1-1: introduces the concepts and models used throughout the series.
Managing IT/OT systems and asset inventory tips
Courtesy: CFE Media and Technology Convergence between information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) networks requires a wide approach in order to ensure proper visibility and security. The need to control OT processes to optimize business has led to a series of integrations and connections that expose OT systems to IT risks and vice versa.
Cybersecurity demands coordinated tactics
Current industrial automation and control system (IACS) technology uses a blend of traditional control hardware and software with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) information technology (IT) components (see Figure 1). This allows system designers to leverage an increasing array of COTS hardware and software choices when designing, building, maintaining and upgrading control systems.
IT/OT convergence advice, best practices for manufacturers
Suzanne Gill of Control Engineering Europe spoke with a few thought leaders on the cybersecurity challenges manufacturers face and how they can best overcome them. Their suggestions and tips follow. Biggest security risks and challenges of information technology/operational technology (IT/OT) convergence Prof.
Securing the future of industrial controls against cyber threats
Energy systems historically have been consistent, safe and reliable, but that doesn’t mean they’re not a target of cyber threat. More and more attackers are now explicitly targeting the kinds of industrial control systems (ICSs) the electric sector relies on. Bringing the energy market into the future to meet changing needs was the focus of Day 2 of Fortinet’s Operational Technology Symposium, Energy Day, an online event held on Aug. 31, 2021.
How the EU Machinery Directive will change regulation
The Machinery Directive 2006/42 /EC had not been revised for 15 years, and clearly needed updating. And so, a written proposal for the new machinery regulation was issued on April 21, 2021. However, since we do not yet have any definite timescale for its implementation, we must assume this will not occur until 2023. Let us examine the main changes the new machinery regulation plans to introduce.

Low-level risk assessment for cybersecurity
The low-level risk assessment is a detailed analysis typically performed after a high-level risk assessment or, sometimes, conducted on specific plants in order to deeply assess the precise risk estimate of a cyber attack. In general, the low-level risk assessment focuses on the most sensitive equipment reported from the high-level risk assessment, and in relation to the potential most critical consequences of a cyber attack.
How to protect marine renewable energy devices from cyberattacks
As marine renewable energy (MRE) developers prepare to deploy these technologies, efforts are underway to guard against cybersecurity threats that could threaten the function of a device and connected systems. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) created the first-ever cybersecurity guidance report for MRE devices on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office.
High-level risk assessment for cybersecurity
Across a complete IEC 62443 risk assessment, the High Level Risk Assessment is performed to determine the potential consequences in the event that a plant/system is compromised by a cyber attack. High-level risk assessment helps identify the most critical areas inside a plant, where it is requested to perform adequate mitigation actions.
What the IEC 62443 standard does for industrial cybersecurity
IEC 62443 is the international standard for the security for industrial automation control systems (IACS). It was set up almost twenty years ago by a group of volunteers belonging to the SP99 Committee, established by the International Society of Automation. It was later reviewed and adopted by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC); hence the original name was ISA 99/IEC 62443.
