In June of 53 BCE, on a sunbaked plain near the town of Carrhae in what is now southern Turkey, the Parthian general Surena destroyed seven Roman legions under the command of Marcus Licinius Crassus — one of the three richest and most powerful men in Rome. He did it with a force outnumbered roughly four to one, using nothing but cavalry, patience, and the geography of the desert. Crassus was killed. The Roman eagles were captured. It would be one of the worst military defeats in Roman history.
