When Dr. Shoshana Hallowell, a breast surgeon with McLaren Health System in Lapeer, Michigan, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020, she knew it put all of her first-degree relatives at higher risk for developing the same condition. Having a parent, sibling or child with breast cancer almost doubles one’s risk for the cancer, according to the American Cancer Society, so Hallowell had her sister, Janet Greaves, get an MRI for her breasts.
