Yet these magnificent animals can be contained behind a simple 3-foot wall because they won't jump if they can't see where they'll land. People, and sometimes entire communities, can be the same way. We often hesitate to take the next step when the outcome isn't guaranteed. We wait until every answer is clear before moving forward. But communities don't grow because everything is certain.

American statesman Benjamin Franklin was concluding a moving speech on the guarantees of the Constitution when a heckler shouted out, "Aw, those words don't mean anything. Where's all the happiness you say it guarantees us?" Franklin smiled and calmly silenced his critic. "My friend, the Constitution only guarantees the American people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself." Happiness is a state of mind. So are anger, sorrow, disappointment and loneliness.

Happiness is a state of mind. So are anger, sorrow, disappointment and loneliness. The mind is the most powerful tool in the universe, but you are the one who controls it. Like your car, if you see your mind heading in the wrong direction, you can steer it the other way. You need to recognize when you have negative feelings and try to steer your mind in a different direction. And there is no better time since August is Happiness Happens Month.
