What happened in Santiago, the matter that began my great downfall, the rupture in my previously hallowed existence, was this: I played the concert of my lifetime. Article continues after advertisement A statement that might sound foolish, grandiose, ridiculous, I know, but consider this. As the projects near completion, we are looking forward to enjoying the new paths, amenities and views. But to us, it’s what’s not readily apparent that’s most interesting. Goodnight from Paris
Review by Olivia C, Reviewer Last updated on 29 Nov 2022 WWII historical fiction novels are some of my favorites, and "Goodnight from Paris" is no different. This one is just brilliant! A page turner from start to finish, with tension that builds, writing that could be followed closely, love stories and bonds of friendships weaved seamlessly into an engaging tale.
The Women of the OSS: On The Pioneering American Spies of WWII
My fascination with the women of the Office of Strategic Services, the organization that was the precursor to the CIA in WWII, began with a Washington Post article I came across from June 2011, about two best friends in a retirement community in Virginia. Elizabeth McIntosh and Doris Bohrer lived on the same street in the Westminster at Lake Ridge Seniors Village in Prince William County.
The Top 10 Books of April 2021
A super clever, funny, and unforgettable story of a muscular, tattooed man hired as an assistant to two old women—under the watchful eye of a beautiful retirement home manager. Position Vacant: Two ancient old women residing at Providence Retirement Villa seek male assistant for casual exploitation and good-natured humiliation. Duties include boutique shopping, fast-food fetching, and sincerely rendered flattery. Good looks a bonus—but we aren’t picky.
9 Fiction Reads Based on Facts
Feature image credit: @eia_uus I like to learn from fiction—as much as I do from non-fiction—since novels are often threaded with facts and set against authentic backgrounds. I particularly like novels that recreate a way of life or a unique culture that I know I’ll find informative as well as intriguing. Sometimes, as you might expect, these are books in translation. But others open the door to places and people close to home—ones you don’t encounter in your everyday life.

Where History Becomes Story: 8 Tales of Wartime Bravery
It was my father’s birthday the other day. He would have been 97. And in celebrating, I thought about one encounter he and I had some years ago. We were in a friend’s home library, and Dad pulled a battered paperback volume of poetry from the shelves. “This is just like the book of poetry I carried with me in the war,” he said. My dad was in the Battle of the Bulge, and was taken prisoner — and was in a prison camp with a high school pal, Kurt Vonnegut.

For Gothic Heroines, Haunted Houses Are Always Too Big
When I tried and failed to draw an accurate floorplan of the fictional gothic country manor at the heart of my novel, I blamed my own poor draftmanship and research nous—I’d heard it said, after all, that a historical novelist should know every object inside a room her character enters, even if she doesn’t describe them, and surely the same should be said of the walls themselves.

NEW YORK (MainStreet) Believe it or not, highlighting the fact that you were captain of your college's championship Quidditch team on your resume probably isn't going to score you many points with a future employer.
