What was your first job as a journalist?

My first job post-graduation was as a night producer for talk radio. As a reporter, I got my start at the Eastern Courier, in Auckland, NZ.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Gus from season five of The Wire. No contest.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, but I wrote a column on high-school events called "College Comments" for my local newspaper.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Learn shorthand, and bring your own coffee press to work.
