David Applegate, the chief scientist for the U.S. Geological Survey, has been reassigned to a new role at the Interior Department, according to internal emails viewed by POLITICO. A career scientist with nearly 23 years at the survey, who was also serving as acting associate director of the Natural Hazards Mission Area, Applegate told colleagues in a recent email that he had the choice to accept the reassignment or leave federal employment.

National parks group urges Congress to fix hiring gridlock

A group of current and former employees of the National Park Service are urging Congress to act amid broader concerns about staffing at parks. In an open letter to lawmakers Wednesday, the Resistance Rangers said new rules from the Trump administration have created gridlock for hiring despite many parks facing staffing shortages. “National Park Service hiring isn’t frozen anymore, but it might as well be,” the group wrote.

Firefighting resources are ‘critically low’ in record fire year
