The increasing need for clean energy sources has spurred significant research advances in lithium-ion batteries for various scientific, industrial, and consumer applications. As electrochemical performance metrics such as energy density, power, cycle life, and impedance improve, care must be taken to ensure safety against catastrophic failure via thermal runaway.

1. Introduction Li-S batteries are measured to be a promising next-generation battery technology capable of addressing the low energy density limitations of currently commercialized Li ion batteries [1,2]. Significant research and development efforts are underway to advance this technology [3]. When S is used as the cathode material, Li-S batteries show a high theoretical specific capacity of 1675 mAh/g and an energy density of 2600 Wh/kg [4].
