Fire brigade issues notice to Vile Parle building for non-functional fire fighting system

MUMBAI: Two days after a fire gutted an 11th-floor apartment in Vile Parle, killing two-year-old Abir Vatavia and his 23-year-old nanny Ankita Chetri, the Mumbai Fire Brigade has issued a notice to the building society, Shanta Bhuvan CHS, for keeping its firefighting system in manual mode. The fire brigade said the building residents had switched the firefighting equipment from auto mode to manual mode, rendering the system ineffective during the emergency.

India, Aug. 13 -- The child of a developer died on Tuesday night in a fire suspected to have started from an iron box. The Vile Parle building where he fire flared up was constructed by the toddler's own family. Abir Siddharth Vatavia, the 2.5 year-old, died in the arms of his nanny, 23-year-old Ankita Chetri, who had sought refuge in the bathroom, hoping to escape the flames.
