Huffington Post — Survival instincts kick-in when your house is engulfed in flames. Your first thought is to get out. Once safe you might divert your attention to extinguishing the fire. No one sits inside a burning building contemplating how the fire started or "discussing" how the blaze makes them feel. ...

Sterling Tarnished While Silver Shines

Sterling Tarnished While Silver Shines

Huffington Post — Posted: National Basketball Association (NBA) Commissioner Adam Silver deserves an A+ for his press conference in response to Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling's racist comments. As a crisis management expert I was hugely impressed -- a rarity for me. Silver's tone was perfect. His remarks were appropriate and substantive. The league's timing was ideal: not too rushed, yet not protracted. While Silver was spot-on, much of the subsequent commentary and analysis misses key points. Legal Risk It's true, Sterling may sue the league; he is known to be litigious.

Yes, Obama Was Right to Golf After Foley

Yes, Obama Was Right to Golf After Foley

Daily Beast — In 1908 President Theodore Roosevelt warned presidential aspirant William Taft that "golf is fatal," referring to the reputational toll the game can exacts on one's political future. Taft went on to be our 27th president and chose not to heed the advice of his predecessor, instead continuing to play the game he loved - openly. For more than a century presidents from both parties have been criticized for their vacations, and their golf. Do Americans prefer a stressed out president - no fun, no sun, no life outside of the Oval Office or the Situation Room?

Miley Flirts... With Disaster (Part One of Two)

Huffington Post — Posted: Newsflash: A drug-glorifying hypersexual exhibitionist named Miley Cyrus murdered Hannah Montana. I thought everyone knew this until I read that some parents want the performer's tour cancelled; apparently it's too racy for children. You don't say? One parent left the "porn show" claiming it was inappropriate for a nine-year-old. NINE! The following is a public service announcement for all out-of-touch parents: Ultimate Fighting, most live comedy shows, Hedonism Resorts, wine tastings, strip clubs, and fraternity parties are generally inappropriate for toddlers; you can go ahead and add a Miley Cyrus concert to the list.

Kanye Returns to Bonnaroo With a Night of Lectures

Kanye Returns to Bonnaroo With a Night of Lectures

Daily Beast — Kanye West turned a fun Friday the 13th at Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival into a nightmare. The artist returned to the four-day festival in Manchester, Tennessee for the first time since his widely panned appearance in 2008. Then, the typically good-natured crowd seethed with anger when West appeared hours late and then delivered an underwhelming set. I, for one, was excited to see Kanye for the first time, sharing with some of the more skeptical festival-goers near me that I expected an epic performance. If Bonnaroovians harbored ill will for the star, it did not show.

Christie bridge scandal response could have been sharper - Philadelphia Business Journal

Philadelphia Business Journal — Dan Hill (Guest columnist), President of Ervin | Hill Strategy For Governor Chris Christie, his road to the White House requires traversing the George Washington Bridge. Before Thursday's press conference I was uncertain whether he could make it across the "world's busiest bridge," but now I would say that he at least has a shot -- even if some of the lanes are closed. I, and many others, have criticized the governor's handling of the situation thus far. For me, I evaluated Gov. Christie's initial response through a crisis management lens rather than from a political perspective.

Scandal Is Scandalous

Scandal Is Scandalous

Huffington Post — Posted: Is running a real-life crisis and reputation management firm in the nation's capital anything like the ABC television series Scandal? I've been asked variations of that question dozens of times. Truth is until this week, I had no idea because I had never seen the show. Now that I have, here's the answer: a resounding NO! Kerry Washington's character Olivia Pope and I have nothing in common. You could even say I am the anti-Olivia Pope. The dichotomy between her work and mine is highlighted in the show's profile on the ABC website: Everyone has a secret...
