Global Citizen conference to unite political leaders, celebs
NEW YORK (AP) — Advocacy group Global Citizen will convene political, philanthropic, business and cultural leaders for a thought leadership conference in New York to tackle extreme poverty more quickly. The group announced Tuesday that Global Citizen NOW will be a two-day conference beginning April 27, co-chaired by Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, as well as leaders of Barbados and Ghana, along with Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Tony winner and “Wolverine” star Hugh...
Global Cooperation is Our Only Hope to Recover From the COVID-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic will determine the trajectory of the 21st century, but in what direction? Will it come to be known as a crisis that stalled progress on extreme poverty, inequality and climate change, or one that brought about even greater urgency and global cooperation against these threats? While it remains too soon to offer definitive answers, our collective actions are drafting responses in real time. Early indications are mixed.
No Herd Immunity For Poverty
While it’s recklessly premature to start talking about Covid-19 in anything like the past tense, we don’t have the luxury of holding out for history’s considered verdict before acting on the pandemic’s brutal lessons. Crises don’t wait politely in turn; they converge and compound. Every one of the estimated four million lives lost so far from COVID-19 is tragic in its own way, but mortality alone fails to capture the pandemic’s seismic impacts.
Three Things The G20 Can Do Right Now To End The Pandemic
Two weeks ago in Los Angeles, over twenty thousand fully vaccinated frontline workers came together for Vax Live: The Concert to Reunite the World — the first large-scale event with an audience since March 2020. This was only possible because of vaccines, because every citizen is aware of how their own behavior can protect others, and because frontline workers never gave up. Here in the US, we have an abundance of vaccines.
Why Wealthy Countries Need To Share Vaccines Immediately
A year into the pandemic, COVID-19 continues to spread. Citizens around the world are rightfully frustrated, fearful about getting sick, worried about a vulnerable parent or child whose education has been disrupted, and about their livelihoods being at-risk from ongoing cycles of lockdown. We all want this to be over. But with spring coming, hope is on the horizon. President Biden announced that by May, all Americans wishing to receive the vaccine, would have access to it.
What Will It Take To End COVID-19 And Kickstart A Global Recovery?
COVID-19 has disrupted the life of every individual on the planet. The terrifying statistics are unavoidable: more than 2.2 million people dead; newly diagnosed cases on the rise; trillions of dollars wiped off the global economic balance sheet. And as a result, progress toward achieving the United Nations Global Goals, the blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet that was adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, has stalled.
The Future Of Philanthropy
The rise in global philanthropy over the past 40 years has been a welcome sight to the world. But as we grapple with the collective impact of COVID-19, the reality is the wealthiest among us can and should do more. Recent estimates suggest that the world’s wealthiest have collectively amassed a net worth of 8 trillion dollars.

A long road ahead for girls’ education

My forecasts and thoughts for Ohio’s Senate and Gubernatorial elections
Ohio is gearing up to its Senate and Gubernatorial elections in November. Both elections are critical battlegrounds; in the Senate election, incumbent Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown is facing a fight from Rep. Jim Renacci from Ohio’s 16th Congressional District.
Turnbull's Budget: A Time of Reckoning for Australian Values
Relief supplies provided by AusAID are handed out to communities in Tailevu, Fiji. A nation’s budget is more than just a ledger sheet. It is a document that reveals the values of a nation and its leaders. How then are we to judge the budget that Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull revealed on Tuesday? Australia’s neighbours in the Indo-Pacific region are home to nearly half of the world’s poor, and yet the Australian government has extended a freeze on foreign aid through 2023.
Opinion: Tech innovations can put education at the forefront of the development agenda
On Feb. 2, world leaders gathered in Senegal with an ambitious and worthy goal: to raise $3.1 billion for the Global Partnership for Education to help fund schooling and better learning outcomes in developing countries between 2018 and 2020. The money should have been easy for the planet’s richest nations to raise together. It was only slightly more than they spend every single day on NATO defense.
The world's most trafficked mammal
World Pangolin Day takes place on 17 February. The plight of these magnificent small scaly anteaters is often dwarfed by the illegal trafficking of ivory, rhino horn and wild cats, but their existence is in danger. The 8 species, 2 of which – the Sunda Pangolin and the Chinese Pangolin – are indigenous to Laos, have the unenviable title of the most trafficked mammal in the world.
Administration's dangerous position on foreign aid will exacerbate international health crises

Op-Ed: Why Global Citizen is challenging the refugee ban

Refugee Executive Order Puts Trump on the Wrong Side of History
Whether President Trump recognizes it or not, he shows many of the traits of a global citizen. He has married two foreign-born naturalized Americans, and his son-in-law is the grandson of Holocaust survivors. That is perhaps no surprise for a family that has benefited so richly from the free flow of immigrants into the United States seeking economic opportunity: his grandfather Friedrich came to America in 1885 to escape financial hardship.
Australia Swears In Its First Indigenous Minister
History was made last week as Western Australian MP Ken Wyatt was sworn in as Minister for Aged Care and Indigenous Health. He is the first indigenous person to serve as a minister in the Australian Parliament. Wyatt first made history back in 2010 as the first indigenous person to be elected to the House of Representatives. His promotion to minister is part of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s fourth reshuffle since taking office 18 months ago.

Will Global Citizens Stand Up To Trump’s Ban?
Millennials want bridges, not walls—and Trump’s inhumane refugee ban may quickly alienate a new generation at home and abroad. It appears President Trump is enraged that the Prime Minister of Australia, my country of birth, asked him to honour an agreement struck with the Obama administration to take in 1,250 refugees currently enduring dire conditions in the island state of Nauru. The call between the leaders of two longstanding allies was the “worst yet”, according to White House insiders.
Why Global Citizen Matters Today More Than Ever Before
The election of Donald J. Trump as the 45th President of the United States has been touted as the biggest political change since the war, and as such will be hard for many around the world to process. But we don't have the luxury of time to ponder. The challenges ahead of us are too numerous and too great. Right now we need to dust ourselves off and keep championing the causes that transcend any one election or political figure.
Comment: We can end global poverty, and only politicians can stop us
Hugh Evans' TED Talk asked: What does it mean to be a citizen of the world? (TED.com) Hugh Evans' TED Talk asked: What does it mean to be a citizen of the world? People have the power, if politicians don't stand in the way, he writes. For the first time, billions of citizens have the tools we need to overcome extreme poverty and diseases like malaria and tuberculosis. Across the world, more people have lifted themselves out of poverty in the past 15 years than in the preceding century.

Opinion: How to get more kids in school
This year, almost 60 million primary school-age children will have no access to school. While the world has made progress to get more kids to school since 2000, the severe lack of financing for global education continues to waste global talent and inflicts a lifelong sentence of poverty for those without an education.
How to get more kids in school
Recent progress in the United States can be measured by funding increases for global education by President Barack Obama; Raj Shah, administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development; and Congress -- driven by the bipartisan leadership of Reps. Kay Granger and Nita Lowey.
Achieving universal food security is within our grasp
When it comes to reducing the number of people who can’t afford food, the world has come a long way. In 2012-14, an estimated 795 million people were chronically undernourished, down more than 100 million over the last decade, and 209 million fewer than in 1990-92. Clearly, progress has been made. This is proof that the war against hunger can be won, and it should inspire countries and corporations, with the assistance of the international community, to work toward a world free of hunger.
Opinion: Act now on the Water Act
Toilet, latrine, loo, washroom, baño, water closet, toilette -- no matter what you might call it, toilets are a basic tool for sanitation. And in many countries, access to one is taken as a given. But not for the 1.1 billion people who have to defecate in the open. Men, women and children who are left to face conditions that are unsanitary, sometimes dangerous and often humiliating. So what if we told you the United States could help address the problem?
