'The sound of the summer I hope everyone will enjoy'
What do you do if you are driving alone? Personally, one of the first things I do is reach for the "radio on" button. I enjoy the fact I can immerse myself in music, which is, to a greater or lesser extent, of my own choosing (if it's the radio, obviously I have to yield to their own choices about what is playing).
Column: Connections are vital for the health of our churches
Memory can be a fickle thing. It can be so tempting to look on the past as a golden age when everything was better. For example, a bygone age without the busy-ness of modern life, but forgetting that that same age also lacked, for example, the modern healthcare system. I have spent the last weekend returning to Northumberland, where I worked some 25 years ago. It was lovely to meet up with some old friends, and we shared some memories and stories.

Why Cambridge’s £75m tourism revamp risks stripping the city of its charm
On average, Cambridge attracts over 22,000 visitors a day - Getty Souvenirs. Harry Potter. Vapes. Perhaps too simple a summation of the modern-day experience of Cambridge city centre, but it is certainly how the Cambridge Gift Shop on Market Passage has found success, as detailed by its hanging sign. Inside, shoppers, some independent, some clearly part of an organised trip, peruse trinkets and tat, University swag and Union Jacked future landfill.
Fatma Said and Joseph Middleton recital at Milton Court Concert Hall | Live Review
Hugh Morris Fatma Said and Joseph Middleton | Photo: Mark Allan / Barbican The soprano Fatma Said is a performer more than capable of constructing thoughtful, intelligent song programmes to go alongside her operatic work in Europe’s biggest halls. Her recent recordings underline that versatility: 2022’s ‘Kaleidoscope’ is a case in point, though music recorded on ‘El Nour’ from 2020 featured more in her recent Milton Court recital.
The sleepy Norfolk village coming to terms with its boutique rebranding
The wind howled down Holt Street, Langham’s main drag, whipping leaves into autumn tornados. Above, two geese seeking warmer climes struggled to stay their course, but at ground level there was not another soul in sight. It was Friday afternoon and to my left and right, set back from the road, a few – but not all – houses began to turn on lamps, light fires. I knew this small North Norfolk village would be quiet, but I did not expect silence.

REV. HUGH MORRIS: How long, Talladega?
When I was a teenager in Talladega, there was rarely a fight. If there were a fistfight or knife fight, it hardly ever ended in death. When there was a brawl, it only took one adult to break it up. If an adult did that now, that would possibly be the last thing he/she would do. There was a time when, if a group of young African-Americans walked down the street, we laughed when white folk would cross the street. Today, most of us cross the street as well.

People are inventing new ways of living; trying to right the wrongs; and trying to recover, rebuild and rebalance. But how do we repair our society after 300 years of oppression?

Cape Town's Drought Has Shown Us the Future of Travel - Even if it Means Not Flushing the Toilet
I’m staring at the murky, jaundiced toilet bowl. I reach for the flush but stop and pull my hand back. “If it’s brown flush it down, if it’s yellow let it mellow.” Sorry to be crude, but that would be as much as 13 litres of water gone, a fifth of my daily allowance in a Cape Town struggling to manage the precious resource during the city’s worst drought in living memory.
