High-speed internet coming to rural Stanford
Feb. 21—Nearly 300 homes near Stanford in western Monroe County soon will have access to high-speed internet service. A partnership between Smithville telecom and the Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC is behind the project, which will include 280 customers initially and about 500 more as the project moves ahead. Infrastructure work started three weeks ago and is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

Brown County switches on 'leaf cam' that eyes fall foliage

Laura Lane, The Times NASHVILLE, Ind. — Brown County tourism officials have switched on their seasonal "leaf cam" that monitors the forested region's changing fall foliage. The camera that's perched atop a cabin near the southern Indiana county's Bean Blossom overlook shows a panoramic view of the scenery nearby, and refreshes every 15 minutes. The forested view of the county that's a popular tourist destination currently shows largely green leaves.

Hoosier weaves for good cause
Indianapolis native Mary Ann Carpenter began weaving 35 years ago when she grew tired of buying wedding gifts for friends. Rather than purchasing a set of placemats and napkins for each couple, Carpenter decided to make them herself. “I was looking at those one day and said, ‘I could weave these,’” Carpenter said. “So I took classes.” When Carpenter was a child, her grandmother had a loom in her kitchen. This memory gave Carpenter the confidence to try weaving for herself.

A shooting Monday evening at the Orland Square Mall in Orland Park left one person dead. A 19-year-old man was shot outside a clothing store in the mall and the shooter was still at large, Times of Northwest Indiana partner NBC 5 reported. Orland Park Police Chief Tim McCarthy told NBC police were searching the mall. The victim was taken to the hospital where he died.

Officials say the men were rescued near Chicago's North Avenue Beach following a 911 call about 7:15 a.m. Friday.
Man accused of not paying bill, injuring officers in Valparaiso
A man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly refusing to pay his bill at a restaurant and causing injury to officers in Valparaiso, according to police. Joseph Pancek, 48, of Valparaiso, was charged with resisting law enforcement, disorderly conduct and public intoxication, according to Sgt. E.J. Hall. Police responded about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at Semento's Napoli Cafe, 1200 West St., after receiving a call about an intoxicated man who refused to pay his bill.
