Metatranscriptomics analysis reveals the cotton virome in the southern United States - Scientific Reports
Abstract High-throughput sequencing (HTS) has expanded our perspective on the distribution and diversity of plant viruses. Furthermore, improvements in HTS and decreasing sample costs have enabled the discovery of novel plant viruses in field-collected samples. This study examined the putative virome of cotton samples collected from fields across the southern United States. Leaf samples were collected, and total RNA was extracted.
Harnessing S. cerevisiae to advance the engineering of pentatricopeptide repeat proteins
PPR pentatricopeptide repeat Pentatricopeptide repeat proteins in heterologous systems Pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) proteins are a family of ɑ-solenoid RNA-binding proteins involved in maturation of chloroplast and mitochondrial transcripts. They have undergone a large expansion in plants and are involved in numerous processes, including transcript stabilisation, cleavage, splicing, translation and RNA editing.

CRISPRi-based circuits to control gene expression in plants - Nature Biotechnology
Abstract The construction of synthetic gene circuits in plants has been limited by a lack of orthogonal and modular parts. Here, we implement a CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) interference (CRISPRi)-based reversible gene circuit platform in plants. We create a toolkit of engineered repressible promoters of different strengths and construct NOT and NOR gates in Arabidopsis thaliana protoplasts.
Insights into U‐to‐C RNA editing from the lycophyte Phylloglossum drummondii
INTRODUCTION Lycophytes are an ancient lineage of plants that are a phylogenetic sister to all other vascular plants. They are split into three families: Isoetaceae, Lycopodiaceae and Selaginellaceae (Wickett et al., 2014). Lycophytes were among the dominant life forms during the Carboniferous period and were highly diverse deep into the Palaeozoic era, but they were superseded by ferns and seed plants.
Alteration of Mitochondrial Transcript Expression in Arabidopsis thaliana Using a Custom-Made Library of Pentatricopeptide Repeat Proteins
1. Introduction Mitochondria are one of the most important cellular organelles, playing a key role in cellular respiration in plants. Mitochondrial genes mostly encode membrane proteins of the respiratory chain, i.e., nad1 to nad4, nad4L, nad5 to nad7, nad9 (complex I) [1,2,3,4,5], cob (complex III) [4,6], cox1 to cox3 (complex IV) [7], atp1, atp4, atp6, atp8 and atp9 (complex V) [4,8].
A unique C‐terminal domain contributes to the molecular function of Restorer‐of‐fertility proteins in plant mitochondria
Variation of the number of RFLs in flowering plants In total, 3776 long PPR proteins containing RfCTDs were identified from 213 plant species representing 123 genera (Table ). There is a high degree of overlap between proteins identified as containing an RfCTD and RFLs identified by our usual method, which relies on sequence clustering with OrthoMCL (Melonek et al., 2016) (Fig. 4a).

The genetic basis of cytoplasmic male sterility and fertility restoration in wheat
Abstract Hybrid wheat varieties give higher yields than conventional lines but are difficult to produce due to a lack of effective control of male fertility in breeding lines. One promising system involves the Rf1 and Rf3 genes that restore fertility of wheat plants carrying Triticum timopheevii-type cytoplasmic male sterility (T-CMS).
Florida: Peanut Rust - What to Know
Pustules of peanut rust found on the underside of the leaves in the canopy. Photo: Jay Capasso, University of Florida As we approach the end of the peanut production season, Florida’s peanut farmers need to be wary of peanut rust. Rust has been identified in fields in Columbia, Suwannee and Gadsden Counties this week (Sept. 1-3, 2020).
Florida Peanuts: Pod Rot Issues Amplified by Heavy Rains
Typical symptoms of peanut pod rot. Note the dark colored pods with sand and dirt stuck to the shell. Despite the presence of pod rot, the root system was generally healthy. Photo: De Broughton, University of Florida In recent weeks, peanut growers throughout North Florida have observed an increase in the occurrence of soil borne, pod rot diseases.
North Florida Corn: Fusarium Crown, Root Rot Causing Major Damage
Fusarium root rot in corn. Photo: Fanny Iriarte, University of Florida In recent weeks, extension agents in various locations across North Florida (primarily in the Northeast) have received calls from growers and consultants about symptoms of rapid decline in corn. Symptoms observed include leaf blight and in general, a wilted, scalded appearance of foliage still in the milk stage of grain maturity. Fall back of ears can be seen, and plants appear to be experiencing a rapid systemic decline.
Plant organellar RNA editing: what 30 years of research has revealed
Summary The central dogma in biology defines the flow of genetic information from DNA to RNA to protein. Accordingly, RNA molecules generally accurately follow the sequences of the genes from which they are transcribed. This rule is transgressed by RNA editing, which creates RNA products that differ from their DNA templates.
Simulation of heterosis in a genome-scale metabolic network provides mechanistic explanations for increased biomass production rates in hybrid plants
Abstract Heterosis, or hybrid vigour, is said to occur when F1 individuals exhibit increased performance for a number of traits compared to their parental lines. Improved traits can include increased size, better yield, faster development and a higher tolerance to pathogens or adverse conditions. The molecular basis for the phenomenon remains disputed, despite many decades of theorising and experimentation.
The synthetic biology revolution is now – here’s what that means - CSIROscope
By Claudia Vickers, Ian Small 6 September 2018 4 minute read Clinical trials using immune cells engineered through synthetic biology have been shown to push some patients into remission from blood cancer. from www.shutterstock.com We live in an era where biotechnology, information technology, manufacturing and automation all come together to form a capability called synthetic biology.
The synthetic biology revolution is now - here's what that means
Technological revolutions are significant because they shape the future of social and cultural development – as is evident for the industrial revolution, the "green revolution", and the information technology revolution. Now synthetic biology is shaping up to be the dominant technology of this century, and Australia has made clear moves to be on board. Synthetic biology is the design and construction of new, standardised biological parts and devices, and getting them to do useful things.

Why Audiobooks Are Better Than Print Books
Expert publishing blog opinions are solely those of the blogger and not necessarily endorsed by DBW. I’m always surprised by the hesitancy with which some people approach audiobooks. Despite their ability to offer consumers a uniquely beneficial experience with the text, the format is frequently met with reservations. Last month, Daniel Berkowitz discussed some of those misgivings in his piece “Audiobooks Make Me Feel Like I’m Cheating” for this publication.
Big data and privacy: Getting the balance right
When it comes to creating the digital world of the future, data – in massive volume – forms the foundation. The ability to access unprecedented levels of data from multiple sources is providing organizations with the insights they need to change the world. From healthcare to customer service, product development to education, big data is already starting to provide huge benefits to individuals and societies. One field that will be transformed completely by data is law enforcement.
