Beaumont — A Beaumont mother said she was on the phone with her daughter just minutes before a shooting at an apartment complex left the 24-year-old woman hospitalized and her friend dead. Chyna Ryans’ family said she is recovering and improving at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. Her friend, 25-year-old Nastazia Corbin, died earlier this week at the same hospital after suffering a traumatic brain injury in the shooting.

Beaumont — A string of shootings involving teen suspects in Beaumont has raised questions in the community about whether prosecutors can use Texas’ organized criminal activity law to curb juvenile violence. Jefferson County District Attorney Keith Giblin said he is not seeing an increase in gang or organized crime activity in the area and said his office is seeking maximum penalties for violent offenders.

Beaumont — Grief and anger are consuming the family of Nastazia Corbin after she was shot in Beaumont, leaving behind three young children and loved ones calling for an end to gun violence. Corbin was shot in the parking lot of the Virginia Flats apartments in Beaumont. Her family said they were in shock when they learned what happened. “It was tragic. And it hurt. But I still had faith that was... My niece was gonna wake up,” said Romia Sims, Corbin’s aunt.
