Introduction Sensory receptors of many sensory modalities act as filters, transducing and transmitting only a subset of attributes of any incoming sensory signal. Auditory and vestibular hair cells, for example, are particularly well known for their sharp tuning properties (Crawford & Fettiplace, 1980; Fettiplace, 2020; Hudspeth & Lewis, 1988a, 1988b).
