Isaiah Berlin and Andrea Wulf
We recently read two books on Romanticism, a historical-artistic category that has always carried with it the qualification of a watershed movement of contemporaneity. Two different books, both far from the academy, released in the last months of 2023. One is a gigantic story brilliantly set in the city of Jena, a German hotbed of founding ideas and adventures of a large number of figures central to our discussion. The title is Magnificent Rebels.

The Best Books on Marx and Marxism
Before we start on the books should we be talking about Marx or Marxism? We need to talk about both. In particular, we need to be talking about Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and Marxism. Marxism was a construction — it became an ism. Marx became a figure or a trope within that. Engels was a crucial determinant, in my view, in why and when that happened. This whole trio is particularly interesting because they’ve all been made over several times. We’re looking at classic reception studies here.

Back to Berlin by Roger Scruton
Berlin was a famously garrulous person, whose conversation fascinated and charmed his audience. He was also both deeply interested in other people and affectionately disposed towards them. Indeed, if there is one positive quality above all others that comes across from these letters, it is that of constantly renewed affection—for which Berlin was rewarded in life by the enormous circle of his friends, and in death by the devotion of those who seek to keep his memory alive.

A Special Supplement: The Question of Machiavelli | by Isaiah Berlin
There is something surprising about the sheer number of interpretations of Machiavelli’s political opinions. There exist, even now, over a score of leading theories of how to interpret The Prince and The Discourses—apart from a cloud of subsidiary views and glosses. The bibliography of this is vast and growing faster than ever.

The Great Amateur
Alexander Herzen, like Diderot, was an amateur of genius whose opinions and activities changed the direction of social thought in his country. Like Diderot too, he was a brilliant and irrepressible talker.

Shostakovich at Oxford
The following letter from Isaiah Berlin to his friend Rowland Burdon-Muller about Dmitry Shostakovich’s visit to Oxford appears in Berlin’s Enlightening: Letters 1946–1960, to be published in the US in late July. The book marks the hundredth anniversary of his birth in 1909. The Best Isaiah Berlin Books
Who was Isaiah Berlin? He was an émigré Russian Jew who came to Britain at the age of eleven, leaving the Soviet Union because of the after-effects of the Russian Revolution. He was one of numerous émigrés from both Nazism and Communism in the UK who had a great influence on our culture: they’ve often been written about. He achieved a key position right at the heart of the British establishment, which he somehow underlined by always wearing a three-piece suit.

The Unique Qualities of Joe Alsop
On Tuesday, September 19, 1989, two long-standing friends of the columnist and commentator Joseph Alsop, Washington Post journalist Robert Kaiser1 and British historian of ideas Isaiah Berlin, were in the congregation at Alsop’s memorial service at St. John’s Church, Lafayette Square, Washington, D.C. Kaiser’s father was an old friend of Berlin’s, and Kaiser had known Berlin for many years.
A Message to the 21st Century | Isaiah Berlin
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” With these words Dickens began his famous novel A Tale of Two Cities. But this cannot, alas, be said about our own terrible century.
Mr. Churchill
1 In the now remote year 1928, the eminent English poet and critic Herbert Read published a book dealing with the art of writing English prose. Writing at a time of bitter disillusion with the false splendors of the Edwardian era, and still more with the propaganda and phrasemaking occasioned by the First World War, Mr. Read praised the virtues of simplicity. If simple prose was often dry and flat, it was at least honest.
The best books on The Leaderless Revolution
In the last decade you’ve moved from being a British foreign service officer to a member of Occupy Wall Street’s general assembly. What are the causes of this metamorphosis? It’s a long story that’s told in my book but it started with what I saw in my own [foreign service] work on Iraq – that government was capable of misleading its own population to an extraordinary extent. I found that a profoundly disillusioning experience. It was a shock.
A conversation with Isaiah Berlin
Alan Saunders: Hi, I'm Alan Saunders, and today on The Philosopher's Zone we're returning to the great thinker, Isaiah Berlin whose 100th birthday we celebrated in our last show. This week, we raided the ABC Archives, and found a conversation between Berlin and John Merson, formerly of the ABC Science Unit, and now at the University of New South Wales. The subject is an idea close to Berlin's heart: human freedom. And he begins with the 18th century German philosopher, Immanuel Kant.

A Note on Vico's Concept of Knowledge | Isaiah Berlin
Vico’s fundamental distinction, as everyone with the least acquaintance with his writings knows, is between verum and certum. Verum is a priori truth and is attained in for example, mathematical reasoning, where every step is rigorously demonstrated. Such a priori knowledge can extend only to what the knower himself has created. It is true of mathematical knowledge precisely because men themselves have made mathematics.
