1 INTRODUCTION The recent need for sustainable energy alternatives and reducing greenhouse gases emissions enhances the development of novel technologies allowing the conversion of waste to energy (Sherwood, 2020). Within this concept, anaerobic digestion (AD), an energy-efficient technology, has been successfully applied for treating various types of wastewater (Kleerebezem et al., 2015; Rajagopal et al., 2013; Rajeshwari et al., 2000) and for biogas production (Muñoz et al., 2015).
