My writing has taken me from tracking poachers in South Africa to Buddhist-led calligraphy meditations in remote Zhoushan, China, and many places in between – always with a focus on making connections between people and places. I've eaten many a questionable meal, slept amongst crocodiles and perfected the art of the packing cube. I'm originally from America's Deep South and call Sydney home. As the sun sets over Nashville, the city’s polished new skyline rises beyond its historic music roots.Kortney Musselman Nashville’s famous honkey-tonk street, Broadway, smells faintly of beer, hot chicken and ambition. Cheap cowboy hats – “Only tourists wear them, this innit Texas,” one of the locals tells me - glow like traffic cones under neon lights while men named Chad sing Luke Combs covers to patrons in achingly stylish western boots.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Grow some tough skin; you'll get used to hearing 'no' more than 'yes' especially when you're starting out. Stay organised. Use your manners.
