Inkathazo: a giant galaxy that’s 32 times bigger than Earth’s
You may not know it, but right now there’s a huge cosmic rave party happening far, far above our heads. The chief party goers are known as supermassive black holes. These mysterious objects can have masses several million or billion times that of the Sun and are so dense that they warp space time around them. Don't want to see this? Remove ads As far as astronomers know, all galaxies harbour a supermassive black hole at their very centres.

How visionary scientist Bernie Fanaroff put African astronomy on the map
Recent decades have seen remarkable growth in astronomy on the African continent. Africa enjoys pristine dark skies and vast radio quiet zones, making it the ideal home for many advanced telescopes trained on our galaxy and beyond. For instance, Namibia hosts the High Energy Spectroscopic System (HESS), which is an impressive gamma-ray telescope. The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) in the small South African town of Sutherland is the largest optical telescope in the southern hemisphere.

Pasha 92: How we discovered two new giant radio galaxies
A telescope in South Africa by the name of MeerKAT enabled the discovery of two giant radio galaxies recently. Finding one radio galaxy is special. Finding two is fantastic. Radio galaxies get their name from the fact that they release huge beams, or “jets”, of radio light. The find was made possible by the ability of a phenomenally powerful telescope called the MeerKAT to detect faint, diffuse light, which previous telescopes were unable to do.

Discovery of two new giant radio galaxies offers fresh insights into the universe
SA telescope installation is helping gain a clearer understanding of the evolutionary pathways of galaxies 19 January 2021 - 20:41 By Jacinta Delhaize Two giant radio galaxies have been discovered with SA’s powerful MeerKAT telescope, located in the Karoo. Radio galaxies get their name because they release huge beams, or jets, of radio light. These happen through the interaction between charged particles and strong magnetic fields related to supermassive black holes at the galaxies’ hearts.

The Naked Scientists visit a Croatian high school
What would it be like if The Naked Scientists visited your school? The students of MIOC high school in Zagreb, Croatia had the chance to find out. They learned all sorts of crazy things such as possible ways to die during a galaxy collision, the surprising usefulness of chocolate teapots and how fast you'd have to, erm, "pass wind" to achieve lift off! Hi, I'm Dr Jacinta Delhaize.
Croatian Science Communication Master Class
If you’ve ever listened to The Naked Scientists radio show and podcast (and there’s a high possibility you have if you’ve found this website!), The Naked Scientists team have an incredible knack for pinpointing the most fascinating and important aspects of a science story.
Naked in Croatia - The Naked Scientists Bare All
The Naked Scientists recently went on tour to Croatia! Over the next few weeks you'll have the chance to find out what The Naked Scientists' Dr Chris Smith got up to while he was there. He saw the sights, chatted with the nations’ scientists, students and leaders and dazzled everyone with an explosive live show! In this post (the first of the series) you'll find out what brought him to Croatia and the special role he played in the country's inaugural Science-Meets-Government meeting.
