NEW YORK — Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart had their eyes glued to the box score, mostly stoic but also bashful. During their postgame press conference, on either side of head coach Chris DeMarco, Jones and Stewart didn’t have to say much to communicate how they were feeling. “I’m not in a celebratory mood right now,” Jones said when asked about moving up a rung in career blocks.

At 14 years-old New York Liberty developmental player Anneli Maley remembers, oh-so-clearly, watching her role model Rebecca Allen play for the Women’s National Basketball League’s (WNBL) Bulleen Boomers, now the Geelong Venom. Just like with A-list celebrities, there’s this assumption that all Australians like Maley and Allen just know each other very well because they are Australian. But that’s not necessarily always the case.

There was a scissor lift on Dean Street near the entrance to where the garage and the loading dock are located within Barclays Center. A couple of people were up high on the lift, removing the player portrait on the top left corner of the giant poster that features the 2026 New York Liberty roster dressed in their throwback uniforms.
