How Snyk is normalizing authentication strategies with Gloo Edge
Additional authors: David Harrigan, Gareth Visagie, James Bowes Snyk supports multiple authentication (authN) strategies on its APIs. Historically, API keys have been the primary form of authN, but more recently we introduced support for authN using signed JWTs produced as a result of an OAuth integration. This is currently in use by both our AWS CodePipeline and Bitbucket integrations. In the beginning, Snyk began with a hub and spoke architecture with a central monolith making authN decisions.

The Bon-Ton failed because it tried to be the Saks Fifth Avenue of middle America
The last-standing York-based department store may well have met its demise. Through the ever-changing retail environment, this one-time strong middle America retailer in my opinion lost focus of who their customer was. Yes, you can say the online retailers have had an effect, but The Bon-Ton was positioned in markets where it should have survived. Will AMD Ryzen Laptops Be Cheaper than Intel's?
A reader pointed out: "The 'light but mighty' (in speed and capacity) laptops from Dell, HP and Microsoft seem ... to be very expensive because Intel sells processors at premium prices. Now that AMD has produced Ryzen chips," he asked, "Can you foresee if and when these makers will produce desirable laptops with cheaper AMD chips?" The good news is that Ryzen-based laptops will be here soon. The bad news is that the first ones won't be ultralight models like the Dell XPS 13.
Get the Word of the Day - netiquette | Dictionary.com
The rules of “netiquette” are not exactly static or undisputed. Are emoticons appropriate in formal emails? Are “trigger warnings” thoughtful or over-the-top? Are you irritating everyone you email with your “signature”? Alice Robb, "How Capital Letters Became Internet Code for Yelling," , April 17, 2014

Which Is the Best Browser for Windows 10: Firefox or Chrome?
Which is the best web browser for Windows 10: Firefox or Google Chrome? Over the years, I’ve used and recommended a lot of different browsers for Windows, including Mosaic, Netscape, Internet Explorer, Maxthon, Firefox, Chrome and Vivaldi. Times change, and so do web browsers. You can always switch to whichever feels better at the time. As mentioned previously, Windows 10 already includes two browsers: Edge and Internet Explorer 11.

To describe Christmas as one holiday alone is perhaps an understatement. In Britain, it much rather feels like a series of holidays, a weeks-long chain of rituals, that monopolise December and the proceeding months. This is a sentiment, as I have realised during my year abroad in the sadly-not-yet-so-snowy Alpine mountains, that seems all the more true of Austria and its captivating traditions. The ritual of Krampusläufe (the Krampus processions) is the stand-out example.

What's the best format for storing digital movies?
Having a bit of a clear out, I thought I would rip some old DVDs to free up some space, as I did with my music collection some years ago. I planned to store the content on my NAS to stream/sync to a range of devices, including a couple of DLNA-compliant Smart TVs, iPad, iPhone, Xbox 360 and obviously PCs. I'm not overly concerned about file size, and would prefer the best-quality video and audio possible. I would also like to preserve any multichannel audio (ie 5.1 surround sound).

Now HTML 5 is finished, W3C boss Jeff Jaffe discusses what comes next
The development of HTML 5 has been the major driver for web standards for the past five years or so, and it was finally sent as a Recommendation to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) at the end of October. Does that mean it's finished and done with? If so, what comes next? Well, while HTML 5.0 has been finished, that doesn't mean development has stopped. HTML 5.1 is well under way and should become a Recommendation in 2016, and a first working draft of HTML 5.2 is expected next year.
Pricing Windows at $0, Microsoft isn't giving much away
Pricing Windows at $0, Microsoft isn't giving much away Pricing Windows at $0, Microsoft isn't giving much away Microsoft built its empire by going for volume and low-balling everybody on price: build it high, sell it cheap. When DOS appeared on the PC, for example, it cost $40 compared with CP/M's $160. Windows sold for a fraction of the price of OS/2 (around $500, as I recall) or Sun's Unix ($950), and so on.
Forget Google TV, think Android TV instead
Google TV was one of Google's more spectacular flops, partly because its failure was very public compared to thinks like Buzz and Wave. However, the web giant plans to make another pitch for the living room with Android TV, according to a Verge exclusive. Yes, Google TV was Android as well, but this is different. "It’s all about finding and enjoying content with the least amount of friction," says Google. Which is exactly what Microsoft did 10 years ago.

Microsoft unveils Cortana personal assistant on Windows Phone
Microsoft's Joe Belfiore showed Cortana, Microsoft's long-awaited personal assistant on Windows Phone, at its Build developers' conference today. It's the somewhat belated answer to Apple's Siri and Google Now, and the odd name comes from Cortana AI in the popular Halo series of Xbox games. Cortana does voice searches using Bing, as you'd expect, and can also do things like make appointments and phone calls, and so on.
Happy birthday, Gmail, but you're past your best
Happy birthday, Gmail, but you're past your best Happy birthday, Gmail, but you're past your best Gmail was launched on April 1, 2004, and had a huge impact, mainly because it offered 1GB of storage when Microsoft's Hotmail only offered 2MB. If you work in government or for a law firm -- obvious target markets -- you won't even mind the suggested $1,100 price.
Satya Nadella benefits from Steve Ballmer's early exit
Satya Nadella made his first public appearance as Microsoft's CEO to launch a new version of Microsoft Office for Apple's iPad and other devices. This was good for him, but he didn't have much to do with it. He's only been in office for 52 days, and office suites take years to develop.
