Review: New Denzel Curry album opts for honest jazz-rap
In 2022, no one would question the abilities of XXL freshman alum and rapper extraordinaire Denzel Curry, especially after a spectacular run of projects that includes “Ta13oo” and “Unlocked.” The artist’s sound combines Southern hip–hop inflections with forward-thinking trap production and an intense attention to sonic detail — and for Curry to prove his hardcore roots it would take less than a Rage Against the Machine cover, but luckily, he has that too.
Review: New “Paranormal Activity” movie is frighteningly decent
Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin Paramount+ After seven entries in the “Paranormal Activity” franchise, the flying chairs and door-slamming haunted house shenanigans start to seem like normal activity. Luckily, “Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin” — the franchise’s direct-to-streaming return after a six-year hiatus — remixes just enough of the series’ familiar material to feel worthwhile nearly 15 years after the original film became a cultural sensation.
Review: Latest Michael Myers flick knifes itself
Halloween Kills Universal Pictures First of all, shouldn’t the title be “Michael Myers Kills?” In the context of the film, the holiday Halloween certainly does not kill anyone. Semantics concerning the title, however, is the least of the problems for “Halloween Kills,” the 10th entry — 12th including Rob Zombie’s two remakes — in the classic slasher franchise.
Review: Repetitive love songs fill latest James Blake album
Friends That Break Your Heart Republic Records Albums packed with sappy love songs are such an established framework for pop music that electro-R&B artist James Blake already has two of them under his belt. What more can there possibly be to say on the topic of romance, heartbreak or passion? On “Friends That Break Your Heart,” Blake’s fifth studio album, the digital-age crooner chooses to mine the same vein that produced his best work many years ago, only to find it has run dry.
Review: Band doubles down on gentle sound to unsavory results
"How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last?" 37D03D Musical side projects rarely aim for something big, but then again, Big Red Machine would probably reject that term. Most side projects relish in the middlebrow, usually highlighting weird experimentation unfit for an artist’s main catalog. Everything about its second album “How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last?” finds the indie folk band doubling down on its gentle sound and adding numerous guest collaborators to mostly unsavory results.
Minimum viable onboarding: The 3 essentials to great user onboarding
Whether you're the founder of a small startup with limited resources or the PM at a legacy B2B business trying to transition to a consumer-grade approach, optimizing your user onboarding experience can feel like a daunting task. Product-led companies (like Slack, Mailchimp, or Dropbox, for example) have entire teams of talented folks dedicated to usability testing, journey mapping, and squeezing every bit of performance from their onboarding experience.
Review: “Mortal Kombat” is another terrible video game movie
Mortal Kombat Warner Bros. Pictures More often than not, fans eventually get what they ask for. Whether that be the release of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” or reversing the cancellation of a television series like “Arrested Development,” the entertainment business survives on pleasing audience members. That being said, the third “Mortal Kombat” adaptation to hit big screens, and the first in over twenty years, is not for the fans.
Review: Ken Burns humanizes Hemingway
Hemingway Public Broadcasting Service From “The Civil War” to “Baseball” to “Jazz” — plus most recently, the excellent “Country Music” — filmmaker Ken Burns’ body of work has cemented itself among exhaustive and essential accounts of history. Now with “Hemingway,” co-directed by frequent collaborator Lynn Novick, Burns uses his series to disentangle fact from myth. In the process, Burns crafts the definitive account of Ernest Hemingway’s fantastical life and monolithic oeuvre.
Review: New Zack Snyder project is a monument of cinematic escapism
Zack Snyder’s Justice League The art of the director’s cut is a long-standing and occasionally fruitful Hollywood tradition. Classics like Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now” have each received substantial changes that garnered positive reassessment. However, the extent and cost of the changes that form “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” place the film in a category of its own.
Review: A cast of famous comedians fail to save an unfunny sequel
Coming 2 America Paramount Pictures A years-too-late — decades-too-late, even — comedy sequel lacking the energetic spark and laughs of the original should come as a surprise to no one. What does come as a surprise in “Coming 2 America,” though, is the extent of the quality disparity between films. In theory, the familiar jokes and concepts from the 1988 original ought to still garner some chuckles.
Review: Historical film intensified by superb acting
Judas and the Black Messiah Participant In 1968, FBI director J.
Review: Dramatic film is filled with fits of rage
Malcolm and Marie Little Lamb What role nepotism plays in the failure of “Malcolm & Marie,” Netflix’s latest awards-vying disaster, should be obvious. The film, written and directed by Sam Levinson — son of Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson — and costarring John David Washington — son of Denzel Washington — plays out like a deeply privileged take on the failure of relationships that only growing up in the padded upper echelon of Hollywood could provide.
Review: “Mank” is a weak attempt at pretentious filmmaking
Mank Netflix For cinephiles, director David Fincher would never be the first choice to adapt a story about the tumultuous behind-the-scenes Hollywood drama that went into the creation of the greatest film of all time — “Citizen Kane.” Orson Welles’ 1941 film documents the rise and fall of influential newspaper tycoon Charles Foster Kane — a character directly based on William Randolph Hearst — through the eyes of a reporter trying to interpret his final words.
Review: “Borat” sequel comes at perfect time
Borat Subsequent MovieFilm Four By Two Films Rarely is a movie released at exactly the right time — when the topic filmmakers aim to prod lines up with an agitated national climate. Such is the case for Sacha Baron Cohen’s follow-up to his 2006 film “Borat,” aptly titled “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.” In the 14 years since the events of “Borat,” the fictionalized version of Kazakhstan has been ashamed by Borat’s (Sacha Baron Cohen) failure to gain insight into American culture.
Review: Aaron Sorkin courtroom drama is detached and weightless
The Trial of the Chicago 7 Netflix The year is 1968. Youth in the United States are engaged in a cultural revolution as the country is preparing for its worst year. On one hand, the nation is fighting a seemingly endless war, and, on the other, gearing up for a major election. Sound familiar? Aaron Sorkin — writer and director of Netflix’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” — wants viewers to think so.
Review: Sandler’s latest spook-free comedy is spirited but average
Hubie Halloween Netflix Actor Adam Sandler is funny. However, with a comedic track record as inconsistent as his, it can be easy to forget the highlights of his career, including movies like “Happy Gilmore” or “Billy Madison.” Unfortunately, “Hubie Halloween” — the ninth film Sandler’s production company Happy Madison has churned out for Netflix — is more of a trick than a treat. Sandler plays Hubie Dubois, the village idiot of Salem, Massachusetts, with a heart of gold.
Review: Turbulent album lacks spirit of band’s earlier music
What happens when a rock star gets old? Marilyn Manson, the band led by the singer of the same name, previously used belligerent onstage behavior and menacing anti-Christ personas to boost record sales, but some worried it was negatively impressing on young ears. Marilyn Manson’s 11th album, “WE ARE CHAOS,” makes this answer clear.
Review: Folk meshes with vibrant vocals in stripped album
Whole New Mess Jagjaguwar “Whole New Mess,” the newest album by singer-songwriter Angel Olsen, is folk music set to self-destruct. Brimming with distortion and held together by reverb-drenched, low-fidelity recordings, every song commands attention and simultaneously sounds as if they could disappear at any moment. Olsen rose to fame in the independent music scene throughout the 2010s.
Review: Taylor Swift returns to love song roots in “Folklore”
Folklore Republic Records Taylor Swift’s eighth album, “folklore,” finds the musician returning to a sound she left behind nearly a decade ago — at least on the surface. The soft-spoken balladeer and acoustic love-song penning side of Swift’s music never evaporated completely.
Review: “Extraction” delivers cliche action story
Extraction Netflix Netflix’s new action flick “Extraction” has an astounding amount of talent behind it for a Netflix original. The film features Chris Hemsworth — best known for his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) — and was directed by Sam Hargrave and written by Joe Russo.
Review: Film details horrors of true crime story
The film “Lost Girls” is based on a real cold case. This detail is established right away at the beginning of the movie in the form of a title card, and it immediately puts anyone watching in a unique position. The viewers know that the movie won’t lead to answers or a happy ending. The film’s grim realism highlights the reality of crime and its impact on people. The humanity of the characters and sorrowful confusion they endure is one of the movie’s strongest attributes.
Review: Rapper combines poetic lyrics with jazz sound
Purple Moonlight Pages Ruby Yacht R.A.P. Ferreira’s new album, “Purple Moonlight Pages” is a continuation of the verbose out-of-the-box jazz-rap fans should be accustomed to, and the album is a worthwhile addition to his catalog. Ferreira has always picked production that compliments his lyricism, and that is abundantly explicit in the sound of this album. Previously, he rhymed poetic lyrics on top of sparse production, often padded with beeping electronics and winding strings.
Feminist filmmaker champions diverse narratives
In an interview with Indiewire about her latest film, “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” director and writer Céline Sciamma said, “We want people to have their heart broken and think about themselves.” Although she made this statement about “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” it accurately represents all of Sciamma’s cinematic output so far.
Review: Jokers hit silver screen with laughs and charisma
Impractical Jokers: The Movie Funny or Die Watching an episode of ’s hit show “Impractical Jokers” is like hanging out with a group of high school class clowns — except they are all middle-aged and have a long-running television show. Now, these overgrown jokesters have a feature-length film. The original show has a thin premise.
Why user onboarding is the most important part of the customer journey
Let’s face it: User retention is a product owner’s biggest challenge. Even the best apps aren’t immune from churn. The reality is, you need to be both proactive and strategic about getting users hooked. Take a look at the app user retention rate chart below. For many companies, this is the discouraging trend their retention rates follow: In this example, you’ve lost nearly 75% of your users within the first week, and by the end of the month, you’re down to 6% of your registered users.
5 ways Slack’s user onboarding strategy has evolved since 2014
Slack emerged as the darling of the SaaS world in 2014, and opened its first day of public trading in June 2019—with a valuation of $19.5 billion. During their meteoric rise, Slack earned praise and admiration from product people everywhere for its delightful (and delightfully effective) user onboarding experience .
How TurboTax Turns a Dreadful User Experience into a Delightful One
Filing your taxes is never a fun task (unless you’re certain that you grossly overpaid on every paycheck and are guaranteed a large refund—but even then, “fun” isn’t the word most people would use). Even still, as Appcuties filed our 2018 taxes, we couldn’t help but admire the thoughtful details that Intuit’s product team had put into the TurboTax experience. TurboTax managed to turn the hugely complex processes of deciphering our archaic tax code into a step-by-step, intuitive flow.
The 5 best user onboarding examples
"So, who has the best user onboarding experience?” We get this question all the time. And the answer is, well, complicated. User onboarding best practices are a highly idiosyncratic function of who the new user is—their motivations and pains—and a product’s ability to satisfy that new user’s desire. Can we really say whether Netflix or Slack has a better user onboarding experience?
Minimum Viable User Onboarding
For a small startup with limited resources, optimizing your user onboarding experience can be a daunting task. In fact, I typically recommend early stage startups ignore onboarding and instead onboard new users manually. On the flip side, consider Slack’s user onboarding. The talented folks behind it have probably dedicated thousands of hours to usability testing, mapping their user journey and running experiments to build what they have today. Early stage startups just don’t have that kind of time.
