How bad would it be if GPS satellites were shot down?
Losing GPS isn’t an X-risk, but would create a huge disaster on the scale of Covid-19 or bigger. Hi! From 2020 - 2023 I was one of the early employees at Xona Space Systems, a company working on essentially a next-generation version of GPS. I ended up learning a lot about how GPS works and what it’s used for, and (due to my personal interest in effective altruism) ended up doing some research into what would happen if today’s GPS systems suddenly failed. This post is the product of that research.

Giant optical second- and third-order nonlinearities at a telecom wavelength
A material platform that excels in both optical second- and third-order nonlinearities at a telecom wavelength is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. In this TiN-based coupled metallic quantum well structure, electronic subbands are engineered to support doubly resonant inter-subband transitions for an exceptionally high second-order nonlinearity and provide single-photon transitions for a remarkable third-order nonlinearity within the 1400–1600 nm bandwidth.

"What if we could redesign society from scratch? The promise of charter cities." [Rational Animations video] — LessWrong
In this video, we describe a speculative but promising idea to boost economic growth: giving cities the ability to write some of their own laws and design their own institutions, independently from their parent countries. Jackson Wagner, the first author of this post, has written the script. Writer, the second author, has given feedback. Below, you can find the script of the video.

Big Mac Subsidy? — LessWrong
I do not think this is entirely accurate. Lung cancer in smokers hits unusually young people because, well, they are smokers. Heart disease is a disease of old age and accelerating it somewhat through an unhealthy diet would have complex effects. However, making matters even more complicated, ultraprocessed foods also promote cancers and obesity -- the latter is definitely a huge healthcare burden which does not kill people immediately.

AGI and the EMH: markets are not expecting aligned or unaligned AI in the next 30 years - LessWrong
by Trevor Chow, Basil Halperin, and J. Zachary Mazlish In this post, we point out that short AI timelines would cause real interest rates to be high, and would do so under expectations of either unaligned or aligned AI. However, 30- to 50-year real interest rates are low. We argue that this suggests one of two possibilities: Long(er) timelines.
I have thousands of copies of HPMOR in Russian. How to use them with the most impact? — EA Forum
As a result of a crowdfunding campaign a couple of years ago, I printed 21k copies of HPMOR. 11k of those were sent to the crowdfunding participants. I'm looking for ideas for how to use the ones that are left with the most impact. Over the last few weeks, I've sent 400 copies to winners of IMO, IOI, and other international and Russian olympiads in math, computer science, biology, etc. (and also bought and sent copies of Human Compatible in Russian to about 250 of them who requested it as well).
Population Decline — EA Forum
Most people are choosing not to have kids In recent years, there has been a decline in the number of births worldwide. This trend is especially evident in developed countries, where the average fertility rate has been below the replacement level for some time. There are a number of reasons why people are choosing to have fewer children, or none at all. For one thing, population growth has slowed down in many parts of the world, so there is less pressure to have large families.
Baba Lysaga's Nocturnes and Nightmares
Baba Lysaga’s Nocturnes and Nightmares is a spooktacular AIO - all-in-one. All of the options are very on-theme and will fit perfectly in a Ravenloft, Strahd or horror/Halloween session. Of the player features, there's a lot of fun in the subclasses and spells. About 70% of the material is for dungeon masters. The two adventures pack a couple of notable encounters apiece into their short span, and do well to tie the domains and creatures in the book together in a cohesive, functional way.
That one apocalyptic nuclear famine paper is bunk — LessWrong
I've seen a few commentors and bloggers cite this study from Nature Food to explain why they think nuclear war may lead to the collapse of civilization in event of a full nuclear exchange between the US and Russia. I read it and updated towards Nature Food being a publication with bad terrible editorial standards more than anything else. Wow, 5 Billion people dead. That's pretty bad.
Selfish Reasons to Move to DC
You’ve probably heard the arguments for working in DC policy. Basically, the US government has lots of power and money, and it’s possible to get into influential roles surprisingly quickly. But many in the EA community have a negative view of the quality of life of a DC policymaker: the hours are long; the policy wins are big but rare; the pay is terrible; the bureaucracy is even worse; and you can’t wear jeans to work.
[Cause Exploration Prizes] Crime Reduction — EA Forum
This essay was submitted to Open Philanthropy's Cause Exploration Prizes contest. If you're seeing this in summer 2022, we'll be posting many submissions in a short period. If you want to stop seeing them so often, apply a filter for the appropriate tag! Introduction This piece makes the case for crime reduction as a cause area, as a complement to general criminal justice reform. The argument is structured as follows.
The AI Messiah - EA Forum
This post will be direct because I think directness on important topics is valuable. I sincerely hope that my directness is not read as mockery or disdain towards any group, such as people who care about AI risk or religious people, as that is not at all my intent. Rather my goal is to create space for discussion about the overlap between religion and EA. – A man walks up to you and says “God is coming to earth. I don’t know when exactly, maybe in 100 or 200 years, maybe more, but maybe in 20.
What We Owe the Past — LessWrong
TL;DR: We have ethical obligations not just towards people in the future, but also people in the past. Imagine the issue that you hold most dear, the issue that you have made your foremost cause, the issue that you have donated your most valuable resources (time, money, attention) to solving. For example: imagine you’re an environmental conservationist whose dearest value is the preservation of species and ecosystem biodiversity across planet Earth. Now imagine it’s 2100.
Theses on Sleep - LessWrong
Published originally (with all of the footnotes) on my site: https://guzey.com/theses-on-sleep/ Summary: In this essay, I question some of the consensus beliefs about sleep, such as the need for at least 7 hours of sleep for adults, harmfulness of acute sleep deprivation, and harmfulness of long-term sleep deprivation and our inability to adapt to it. It appears that the evidence for all of these beliefs is much weaker than sleep scientists and public health experts want us to believe.
