Opinion: Anchorage muni staff and Assembly members are acting in good faith on our housing affordability crisis. We should respond in kind.
I think we can agree on one thing in Anchorage: the relationship between the Assembly and much of the community has felt broken for years. Newly elected Assembly member Erin Baldwin Day agrees.

GIFT OF FORTITUDE“A gift of the Holy Spirit which perfects the virtue of courage, giving to the will an impulse and energy which renders it capable of suffering joyfully and, intrepidly, and of accomplishing great projects, overcoming all obstacles.” Unlike the virtue of courage (AKA fortitude) which begins with our own activity and power aided by gr... Subhead GIFT OF COUNSEL The next Gift of the Holy Spirit is called the gift of counsel, or good counsel. This is a gift that perfects the virtue of prudence. It helps us to determine the best course of action to take in daily life. It’s radically useful as the Holy Spirit clarifies for us and in us the authentic movements of God versus my own particular desires. Therefore, by the help of this gift i... Subhead GIFT OF UNDERSTANDING The second gift of the Holy Spirit to examine is the gift of understanding. This is a gift which under the enlightening action of the Holy Spirit gives us a penetrating intuition into revealed truth; that is to say, that this gift gives us an inclination to the depth of the truths that are found in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition; the truths that God has revealed about Hi... Subhead DAUGHTER VIRTUES – MORTIFICATION The final daughter virtue of fortitude that we will examine is called mortification. This is a virtue whereby a person can overcome his own desires for the sake of something better or more important. It’s a willingness to suffer, but for a laudable cause. This virtue is radically important for the good of relationships, families, society, and especially sanctity. Without it, ... To access content, please login or purchase a subscription.

Subhead DAUGHTER VIRTUES – LONGANIMITY/PERSEVERANCE Another daughter virtue of fortitude that is also very related to patience is called longanimity. An easier name for this virtue is long-suffering. Many people confuse long-suffering and patience because they’re very related. As we discussed last week, patience is the ability to suffer well. Long-suffering is the ability to await the good. They are related because many people... To access content, please login or purchase a subscription.

Subhead DAUGHTER VIRTUES – DULIA The final daughter virtue of Justice that we will discuss is called ‘dulia’ (though there are several others daughter virtues of justice we have not reviewed). Dulia (a Greek word) can be defined as giving due honor to one’s superiors. In light of giving to each what is his due, we recognize that certain people are owed a form of respect. Dulia is very different from wors... To access content, please login or purchase a subscription.

The virtue of diligence also falls under justice. Diligence is “fulfilling one’s duty according to one’s state in life.” Justice is to render to each what is due; diligence is related to justice because we owe some service or disposition toward others depending on our state in life. For instance, a husband owes love, protection, care, and respect to his wife. She owes l... To access content, please login or purchase a subscription.

Subhead DAUGHTER VIRTUES – DEVOTION Let’s continue exploring virtues that are under the cardinal virtue of justice. The virtue of devotion is one of them! Generally, I think people have a vague understanding of devotion as a respect and loyalty to a person or to God. Although this is not inaccurate, it’s lacking in depth. Devotion is “the habit by which one has a prompt will to do those things pertaining to... To access content, please login or purchase a subscription.

Subhead DAUGHTER VIRTUES – RELIGION Another daughter virtue of justice that is also very related to patriotism is the virtue of religion. Religion is the virtue by which we render to God (our Father) what is due to Him. It falls under justice because we owe something to God; we owe everything to God. It’s a matter of justice. The word “religion” means to bind together again. Remarkably, God desires a relati... To access content, please login or purchase a subscription.

Subhead DAUGHTER VIRTUES – MEEKNESS In Matthew 11:29, our Lord said, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves.” There is no greater reason I can give as to the importance of growing in virtue. In this verse, Jesus Christ encourages each of us to imitate Him in His virtues. We have already delved into humility; however, meekness must be ... Subhead DAUGHTER VIRTUES – FASTING Another daughter virtue of temperance worthy of exploration is fasting. Though it’s generally not thought of as a virtue, it is in fact. Fasting is mentioned multiple times throughout all Scripture. Because our society is inundated with the idea that all discomfort is bad, the importance of fasting is lost on many Christians. Regardless, it remains a practical spiritual exerc... To access content, please login or purchase a subscription.

Subhead DAUGHTER VIRTUES – HUMILITY The first daughter virtue to discuss is humility, which is of immense value. It directly opposes pride which is at the root of every sin. Pride is when we judge ourselves to be greater than we are. Therefore, without humility pride controls our decisions. We refuse to obey God; we place our own desires above His law. Pride is more than simply boasting about some ability; it’s... To access content, please login or purchase a subscription.

In these past several weeks we have covered a significant amount of ground. We have discussed virtues as the “muscles” of the soul, as the good habits that properly order us in our actions, thoughts and words. Subhead CARDINAL VIRTURES - FORTITUDE The last of the four cardinal virtues for us to examine is fortitude. This unique virtue relates to every other cardinal virtue directly. So, fortitude is vital for us to properly develop in nearly every aspect of life. It’s the ability to stand up to that which is difficult. It’s the ability for a person to do what needs to be done instead of what he or she simply wants to... To access content, please login or purchase a subscription.

Subhead CARDINAL VIRTURES Over the past few weeks, this column has been focused on the value of the three theological virtues necessary for salvation. Subhead CHARITY St. Paul teaches: “And now there remain faith, hope, and charity, these three: but the greatest of these is charity.” He expresses the importance of each of these virtues which are gifts from God that we receive in Baptism. Subhead ON VIRTUES Last week we discussed the essential role of virtues in our spiritual journey. Because the virtues are ‘good habits’ and ‘muscles of the soul,’ they help us in many ways to know right from wrong and to make moral decisions over immoral decisions. I dig some magical worlds like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and sure - why not - Marvel's universe of over-powered heros and villains. There is a common thread between them all: a technology or power that enables rapid decision making. Think about it. For Harry, magical books that dynamically reveal hidden mysteries. For Frodo, why not a palantír (the glass-ball thingy) to go beyond limits of individual knowledge? For Tony Stark, it's Jarvis. How cool would it be to have a Jarvis??
