If we do not interpret Scriptures concerning Christ correctly—in light of the reality they describe—we end up with a God who thirsts, sleeps, suffers, submits, and lacks knowledge. We also end up with a man who is omnipotent, omnipresent, and eternal. If we fail to retain the properties of each nature to themselves, we blend them and start on the short road to heresy.

The Lord has blessed me with the opportunity to attend seminary twice. During that process, I made more than a few mistakes and observed the mistakes of others. I’ve decided to detail a few of the more common blunders here with the hope that they will serve as a warning sign for current and future seminarians. 1. Have the Wrong Aspiration “If any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do” (1 Tim. 3:1) Aspiration is good if it is aimed at the right thing.

Augustine once said of the Trinity, “In no other subject is error more dangerous, or inquiry more laborious, or the discovery of truth more profitable.”1 For many people, the “laborious” nature of trinitarian inquiry proves too high. It is preferable for them to, as one preacher joked, kick Deuteronomy 29:29 as far down the field as possible instead of searching for all that can be known in Scripture. And it’s easy to understand why many people choose this method when it comes to the Trinity.
