What are American Celebrations to the African American?

The United States is 250 years old this year. And my alma mater, the University of Colorado, marks 150 years. There are a lot of celebrations on both fronts. Both institutions also share a common origin thread: African Americans were not welcomed at the founding in either place. So, with apologies and attribution to Frederick Douglass and his July 5, 1852, speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” I will expound on his landmark oratory.

Remembering Roosevelt Hill, Jr.

July 14, 1970 Roosevelt Hill, Jr. and his wife, Myrtes, had just taken six University of Colorado-Denver students to the Colorado State Penitentiary in Canon City to speak to inmates. The topic was “Awareness of the Black Man.” The goal was to encourage inmates to pursue college once their sentences were completed. The students included Reginald Mines, Thaddeus Bynum, Toye Moses, Lawrence Hardy, Donna Pugh (AKA Opalanga Pugh), and Julia Minter.
