Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

1st full-time job was as a copy editor at The Daily Star in Oneonta, N.Y., near the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Not in the last 30 years, but yes.

How is social media changing news?

It's made everything faster and amplified the good -- and bad -- habits of old-school media in terms of coverage, sensationalism, etc

What's your favorite social network?

Instagram, because I'm absolutely not doing work on that platform.

Why did you become a journalist?

I was curious to find out what was going on and share it with other people.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did. I was mostly an editor/layout person, but did a bit of everything, really.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Early in my career, the entire region my newspaper was in suffered historic floods. We kept people informed and helped elevate their story.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

What is your purpose? (Even a small purpose is fine!) And are you doing this to impress people or for a bigger, better reason?

When's the best time to pitch you?

East Coast business hours.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Matt Levine's Money Stuff is a really smart, funny newsletter, and I don't know how he writes so much, every day at that level.
