Ulez linked with better lung growth in children, research finds Original
When London introduced the ultra low emission zone (Ulez) in 2019, the idea was straightforward: cut the dirtiest vehicle emissions and improve the air people breathe. But the big question at the time was whether this measure would actually translate into measurable health benefits. Our new study, published in The Lancet Public Health, suggests that it has had benefits for children’s lung development.

Tractatus Philosophico-Poeticus - Signe Gjessing
[Lolli Editions; 2022] Tr. from the Danish by Denise Newman In the century since the publication of his Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (TLP), which first appeared in English in the summer of 1922, Ludwig Wittgenstein has become, in the words of Marjorie Perloff, something of “a patron saint of artists and poets,” with literary tributes and responses both oblique and obvious (Wittgenstein’s Nephew, Wittgenstein’s Mistress, Wittgenstein Elegy, etc).
Project MUSE - Cicadas

The drive, which we made once or twice each year, took more than four hours on the interstate, and at that age it was the longest distance I knew by experience.
The Bear Woman - Karolina Ramqvist
[Coach House Books; 2022] Tr. from Swedish by Saskia Vogel On the cover of Karolina Ramqvist’s novel The Bear Woman is the partial image of a drawing, which seems to be a map of a small island in some waves. We see trees and bushes, rocks and hills, a winding stream, a little wooden house, and the lone figure of a woman, who seems to have just shot a gun.

James Scales: Technical education - still a pale shadow of its academic cousin
James Scales is Head of Education at the Centre for Social Justice. The skills shortage in our labour market is one of the gravest threats to our country’s prosperity. Supercharged by technological innovation, the world economy is redefining the contours of economic success and we must find a secure place in this new terrain – both to enable social mobility and to thrive more generally. Invariably, our most disadvantaged pupils have the most to gain from addressing our skills deficit.
