Five things on Friday #334
There wasn’t going to be a newsletter this week. It’s 1030am on Sunday morning as I fire up Substack. Today is the first day since Monday I’ve woken up feeling human after suffering a good six days with my second bout of Covid. It has not been fun. But today? Today I definitely feel better. The family are playing Minecraft together (the youngest is teaching Mumma how to play - and it’s going well) and I’ve probably got an hour or so to see if I can knock out a quick newsletter. What do you think?

Hello mate. It has been a week. (And no, not because of ‘the politics’ here in the UK (there’ll be none of that here, thanks).
'Metaverse? What Metaverse?'
On June 29th, our Chief Strategy Officer, James Whatley, was invited to speak at the BIMA Beyond Conference at Ministry of Sound, London. His talk, 'Metaverse? What Metaverse?' sparked huge interest (with one slide in-particular catching a fair amount of attention on LinkedIn) and so, with BIMA's permission, we asked James to recreate the presentation that we're hosting here today.

Hello hello x. It’s the end of week one, month three in the new job. And it’s been hectic* (more, much more, on that later). I hope you’ve been keeping well. It’s Thursday as I write to you. I’m home from seeing DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS and, without giving away anything all I will say is: I didn’t realise how much I’d missed Sam Raimi. I’m hopeful for a subdued FTOF this week.

“At your highest moment, be careful. That’s when the devil comes for you” Hello, friend. A shorter/ish edition this week. The other half has been a bit under the weather and as such, the downtime for writing and collating has been relatively minimal. In sickness and in health and all that. I hope you've had a decent week. I'm coming up on month one in the new role and reflecting on what it means to be a first-time CSO. The responsibility. The ambition. The sense of duty.

Hello :) If you’re one of the 45% or so of subscribers that always reads this thing to the very end then you’ll know that I usually save the ‘thanks for subscribing!’ note for the closing paragraph. But I'm going to start things off with that gratitude this week.

“There is a crack, a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in.” Hello friends. It is hard to write anything without first acknowledging the absolute state of the situation in Ukraine. You can help in a number of ways. Donate to the Red Cross to help people on the ground get food, water, first aid, medicine, warm clothes, and shelter.

Hello. How have you been? It's been 350 days since my last missive. Writing hits different these days. But I've got some stuff that I think you'll like so we'll get into it. I wrote about gaming while you were gone. And writing too. Which means, if you've been paying attention to my Twitter bio, I've got one more think piece on 'Figuring stuff out' to deliver. I'll get right on that. What else can I tell you? Happy winter months. It's cold, crisp. Dark.
12 things I learnt taking 12 months off the ‘gram
I mean, I was joking. But fine. 12 months ago I posted my last in-feed photo on Instagram. It was, like so many others around that time, a ‘Top Nine’; the nine MOST-LIKED photos from my feed throughout that year. Instagram, #TopNine2019 — @whatleydude 8/9 family. 1/9 work. That’s a good balance, I’d say. A few days after that I posted - and pinned - an ‘end of year review’ to my stories, and then promptly uninstalled the app.

We’ve stopped what we are doing and creating your personalized BrandZ™ report, which will appear in your inbox soon. GLOBAL 2016: Behavior is key to building high value, profitable, distinctive brands Actions speak louder than core values by James Whatley Digital Director Ogilvy & Mather James.Whatley@ogilvy.com In today’s more ever-connected world, creating and upholding a core brand identity is paramount to maintaining value, profitability, and longevity.
Digital Transformations: Ogilvy's Key Digital Trends
The fifth annual edition of Ogilvy’s Key Digital Trends Report outlines where the digital and social landscape is headed, and what brands should do, as a result. James Whatley and co-author Marshall Manson, are two of Ogilvy UK’s digital leaders. He shares three of the five digital trends they’ve pinpointed for the year. The full report includes a brief review and grading of the 2017 predictions, and a reflection on some of their long-term predictions from the past years.
Ogilvy’s Key Digital Trends for 2018
You can read the full report (as well as a review of last year’s trends) at bit.ly/OgilvyTrends2018 or join the conversation at the hashtag #OgilvyTrends2018. This year’s trends are: For this article (and word count), I’m going to only look at the first three of these five. In 2018, AR will finally hit tipping point – and it has it has been a very, very slow burn.
One of these things is not like the others
Can you tell? No, I’m not sure either. In the meantime, I’ll just leave this here: Example: a Twitter user is paid by a brand owner or marketing practitioner specifically to use Twitter to promote a brand, product or service. The brand owner or marketing practitioner should ensure that the Twitter user discloses the payment by including ‘#ad’ within their tweet.

Things of note for the week ending Friday April 8th, 2016. I’m writing this intro to you from Istanbul where I’ve spent the last few days relaxing on holiday (see! it does happen occasionally). In fact, the leader image above I snapped on the way back to Eminönü from Üsküdar on Wednesday. A perfect day was had. Much has changed over the past week for yours truly and I’m fairly sure I can state with clarity: I have never been happier.

Things of note for the week ending Friday April 3rd, 2015. To those of you working today: To those of you not working today: Either way, I hope you have an amazing Easter weekend break and hey, to really cheer you, here’s a nine and a half hour Spotify playlist that me and a friend created especially for you. Right then, shall we? 1.
The year ahead for social media
As the wise and wonderful Kanye West once said: "The thing younger people are begging for is a more beautiful world where brands help people achieve things rather than simply barking at them." Never being one to tell Kanye he’s wrong, it strikes me that perhaps his statement needs a little investigation to correct a few assumptions and point out some inaccuracies. Let’s break it down. "Younger people are begging for a more beautiful world." Younger people. Younger than you? Younger than me?
