Algae have proven to be a rich source of novel biologically active metabolites with potential biomedical and nutraceutical applications. Various pigments are among the important metabolites of algae. (1−3) A well-known example is the deep-red carotenoid astaxanthin, a tetraterpenoid produced by green microalga Haematococcus, used for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective effects.

Large African birds crowded on Canadian farms

According to the farm's , "the situation began on December 10, 2024, when a three-year-old ostrich showed pneumonia-like symptoms." This occurred after a group of wild ducks had visited the farm which has a small pond. Over the following month, many more ostriches became sick and nearly 15 per cent of the whole flock died (69 of 468 ostriches). The owners reported calling a veterinarian, but the veterinarian did not come to examine the ostriches or take any tests.
