What we don’t ask: How many mothers have been hit, threatened, coerced or controlled by their partner? How many carry stories of abuse we’ve never taken the time to hear, even within our own families? On a day meant to honor the strength, sacrifice, wisdom and courage of mothers, it is a glaring contradiction to ignore the prevalence of violence against women in our city, state and country. Domestic violence is not rare, and it is not someone else’s problem.

Prosociality has been historically thought to be a distinct human trait. However, over the last few decades, research has revealed that many animals show the remarkable trait of caring for others [1–5]. According to current definitions, prosocial behaviour includes a wide range of social actions that improve the well-being of others, such as helping, sharing, cooperating and comforting [6,7].
