Abstract Internalising symptoms including depression, anxiety and somatic symptoms in adolescence are common. They can be transient, but they can also persist and progress to major depressive disorder (MDD) Polygenic risk scores for major depression (MD-PGS) may help identify which symptomatic adolescents are at greatest risk of later disorder.
The Family Budget Win Most Parents Haven’t Thought About Yet
Groceries, gas, sports fees, school trips, streaming services. The average family budget has a lot of moving parts, and most parents have already gone through theirs looking for places to trim without losing the stuff everyone actually enjoys. One line item that’s worth a second look: the mobile plan. A mortgage or a daycare bill is what it is. A phone plan isn’t.
Can We Improve the Prediction of Early Onset Mania and Hypomania in the Community?
1 Introduction The worldwide prevalence of bipolar disorders (BD) is about 1%–3% and the peak age range for first onset is typically 15–25 years, with some evidence of earlier age at onset in those with a family history of BD [1, 2]. Bipolar-II disorder (BD-II) is more common in females, but the initial full-threshold mood episode in both BD-I and II is usually depression.
Neiman Marcus Chicken Casserole
A keeper! Great flavors Easy to follow Worth the effort Crowd-pleaser Family favorite I added mushrooms, but didn’t cut them small I left them very large, I used real onions and instead of green onions and because of my parents, I could not use hot sauce and I also did not add the almonds…All three of my family (over 80) did not leave a bite on their plate. It was a huge success with many compliments.I’ll definitely make this again!
18 Inspiring Thanksgiving Dinner Ideas
Recently my youngest son and I donned our woolly wear–toques included–and spent a blustery morning at an apple orchard, collecting fruit for the coming weeks. Some pieces will be used for snacking, while others will be turned into tarts and folded into blondies (laced with bourbon and pecans, I might add) for our Thanksgiving feast. We’re hosting 24 people on Sunday, and serving turkey with the usual trimmings.

Polygenic risk scores for mood disorders and actigraphy estimates of sleep and circadian rhythms: A preliminary study in bipolar disorders
1 INTRODUCTION Circadian rhythms are the physiological, physical, and behavioural changes an organism experiences over a 24 h cycle (from circa diem, i.e., “about one day” in Latin). In humans, circadian rhythms of activity characterise the variations of levels of physical activity over a 24 h period. Circadian rhythms of activity can be measured in an ecological way using actigraphy.

Watermelon Lemonade
If you’re anything like me, this summer you’ve been lugging a large watermelon home from the grocery store or farmers’ market only to wonder how you’re going to go about storing the massive gourd. So a few weeks ago, I decided I would use a portion of each one and turn it into a cool and refreshing drink. It helps me with the storage issue and gives the kids something different to quench their thirst with.
3 Tips for Serving Cake and Ice Cream Like a Pro
Nearly all birthday celebrations involve cake and ice cream. Does the phrase, “It all tastes the same” sound familiar when attempting to serve a picture-perfect slice of cake? And how about scooping ice cream? I suppose it doesn’t matter that it looks like a big lumpy blob if it tastes yummy. But how do they manage to serve those perfectly round scoops you get in ice cream shops or see in pictures?

My family does a road trip every summer, which often involves a 15-22 hour drive each way.
Easy Edible Gift Ideas
Not just for the holidays! An edible gift is perfect as hostess gifts, teacher gifts (don’t forget the thank you note!), or as thank yous for neighbours and friends who’ve done something thoughtful. Store-bought gifts are great. Homemade ones are just as nice, especially when they come from the heart of your home – the kitchen. It shows the recipient that you took a little extra time and energy to create something that you know (hope!) they’ll love.

Patterns of stressful life events and polygenic scores for five mental disorders and neuroticism among adults with depression - Molecular Psychiatry
Abstract The dominant (‘general’) version of the diathesis-stress theory of depression views stressors and genetic vulnerability as independent risks. In the Australian Genetics of Depression Study (N = 14,146; 75% female), we tested whether polygenic scores (PGS) for major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety, ADHD, and neuroticism were associated with reported exposure to 32 childhood, past-year, lifetime, and accumulated stressful life events (SLEs).
How to Make a Heart-Shaped Paper Chain for Valentine’s Day
This sweet and simple paper chain craft is perfect for Valentine’s Day, mostly because it’s made with items you likely have hanging around the house: coloured cardstock, scissors, and a stapler. This is my preferred type of seasonal decoration. It doesn’t require any fancy items and can easily jazz up a window, doorframe, fireplace mantle, bookshelf, or staircase.

5 Things to Do with Pumpkins When Halloween Is Over
Wondering what to do with pumpkins and your jack-o-lanterns once Halloween is over? Here are five ways to repurpose October’s hottest outdoor accessory into something new for November. 5 Things to Do with Pumpkins When Halloween Is Over If the pumpkin has been carved it isn’t edible. Instead, you can turn it around so the frightening face is now on the back of the pumpkin and use the shell as a planter for your annual flowers. Make pumpkin puree with any uncarved pumpkins.
A Week’s Worth of Halloween Dinner Recipes
I really like the idea of serving a special Halloween dinner on October 31st before we take the kids out trick or treating. However, the reality is that when the date falls on a weeknight, things are just too chaotic to manage making something extra special to eat (hello, pizza or these easy Halloween dinner ideas).
Pumpkin Quinoa Muffins
I started incorporating pumpkin into our mornings last year when I came up with these pumpkin and quinoa muffins. Vegetables and quinoa for breakfast? Yes, please! These pumpkin quinoa muffins are sure to be a hit with your family — especially if you don’t tell them what’s in them 🙂

Too hot to turn on the oven? While in the midst of a summer’s heat, the last thing most of us want to do is bake but, as we all know, sweet teeth know no season. Peanut Butter Chocolate Frozen Banana Ice Cream
Funny how the frozen banana ice cream craze that popped up many moons ago is still very much a thing. Are you familiar with it? Essentially, you can create a crave-worthy summertime snack by placing frozen banana pieces in your food processor and jazzing them up with almond milk, natural peanut butter, a little chopped chocolate, and pure maple syrup for added sweetness.
3 No-Cook DIY Food Bars for Easy Summer Entertaining
I love summer entertaining, but what I’m not fond of is spending my time by the stove (or grill) while guests mingle and chat without me. My solution instead has always been to offer DIY food bars, where guests can use the food I set out to make a meal for themselves, instead of me preparing the entire thing for them. This idea is probably best illustrated in our very popular DIY burger bar.

From ice wine sangria to Canadiana critter cupcakes to a maple-mustard clubhouse sandwich you can easily make for a small crowd, (or even just your crew), we’re bringing you some homegrown flavours in our delicious nod to the nation. Rainbow Smoothie
I made fabulous rainbow fruit cups last week, instantly inspiring me to try my hand at a colour-infused smoothie recipe. Whether school is in session or not, my boys are always in need of quick and nutritious breakfasts while their bodies adjust to getting up earlier for school or being active in the summer heat. Smoothies are the perfect breakfast addition (or simply, breakfast), and a great way to start the day.
How to Get Your Kids to Try New Vegetables
I once read about a great tip for getting kids interesting in buying, cooking, and eating vegetables, and it seems far too savvy of an idea not to pass it along. If you’re struggling with encouraging your kids to try new vegetables, this might help with the picky eater(s) in your house. Every week, take your kids to the grocery store or market and ask them each to select two different vegetables.
Rainbow Fruit Cups
If you’re looking for a fun, rainbow-themed treat to celebrate Pride Month, don’t worry if you lose so many hours of your life in rainbow cake TikTok drama that leaves you no time to actually make something! With some cute rainbow toppers, these rainbow fruit cups are a delicious and easy way to serve up some summer fruit.
Homemade Creamsicles
You don’t have to be in the midst of the dog days of summer to appreciate something icy cold and slurp-able. The thought of spending time in the kitchen (with the oven on) is almost more than I can handle, and instead of quinoa loaves and cookies, these days my boys are snacking on homemade creamsicles and watermelon pops. Homemade creamsicles are perhaps my most favourite of icy treats, bringing me back to my childhood summers more than any other food.
Life-Changing One-Pot Pasta
This one-pot pasta dish just might change your life. I know it’s changed mine since I first made it, and while I do like to think of myself of a pasta purist—one who cooks the noodles until ‘al dente’ in a large pot of boiling water seasoned with enough salt to resemble sea water—this method definitely has place of pride in my weeknight dinner recipe rotation. Making this pasta is quicker than ordering take-out, and can easily be customized to suit the tastes of any family.
A Week's Worth of Solo Parenting Meal Ideas
Whether your solo parenting status is a permanent thing, or just a week-long stint while your spouse is away, one thing is for certain: it’s hard to be a single parent. You may be on your own by choice or circumstance, or your partner may travel for work or live part-time in another city, but rest assured: there are a lot of people parenting without a partner.
Iced Mango Green Tea
‘Tis the season for simple gatherings of the sweetest sort! Mother’s Day is coming up, of course, but it’s also the time of year for backyard garden get-togethers, baby and wedding showers, ladies’ lunches, and porch parties. It’s when we invite a friend over for salad for lunch or treat our moms to a homemade dinner to give them a break from their own daily cooking. I love this time of year for feeding others because the menu can, and should be, fresh and simple.
Sweet Carrot Cookies
Are you craving the flavours of spring just as much as I am? While I wholeheartedly embrace slow cooker meals, soups, and the comfort food that comes with the cold weather months, I’m equally as excited to usher in new flavours once Spring rolls around. And since the Easter Bunny is on his way, why no treat him to some carrot cookies? These oatmeal carrot cookies perfectly bridge the gap between deep freeze foods and the lighter fare we are looking for this time of year.
10 Really Good Recipes for Your St. Patrick’s Day Dinner
One of the best things about holidays (even those that are considered low-key and not celebrated by everyone) is the simple fact that good food is almost always a part of the celebrating. In fact, you can nothing except gather a few of your favourite people over a tasty selection of themed treats and suddenly dinner takes on a festive feeling. So why not throw a St. Patrick’s Day dinner?
7 Essential Table Manners for Kids
Table manners for kids was something important to instill in my children. And lately, while dining with our two older sons, my husband and I often look at each other in shock over the state of their terrible etiquette. Food is shovelled into mouths that remain open for conversation, napkins are frequently left folded on the table beside the dinner plates and we frequently enter into negotiations over which menu items will and won’t be eaten.
Spring Cleaning the Kitchen: 6 Things Most People Forget to Do
In order to convince myself that winter is indeed over, for good, I’ve been spring cleaning the house. My favourite area to tackle is spring cleaning the kitchen. It’s one of the most used areas in the house, quickly becoming cluttered and messy, and I find myself in there multiple times a day wiping down cupboards and washing dishes. I also take this time to do a few things that most people forget to do when they decide to give their kitchen a good scrubbing.
Sweet Sugar Cookie Pizza with Fruit Toppings
We’ve made this cookie pizza dessert for countless potlucks as well as summer picnics and parties, much to the delight of kids and adults alike. Pizza—in any iteration—is always popular, especially if it is sweet. Use whatever fruits you like and, if time doesn’t allow for making the sugar cookie dough, use brownie mix for the crust. This recipe is an excerpt from the book, Stirring Up Fun with Food by Sarah Michelle Gellar and Gia Russo. We have reprinted it here with permission.
Kale Colcannon Recipe
For St. Patrick’s Day, I’m turning to classic Irish-inspired dinners to get me through the last (hopefully!) of the cold days of winter. Meals made of potatoes, cabbage, and kale are seasonal, relatively nutritious, and economical, and we’re having fun making dishes with wonky names like boxty, coddle, champ, and colcannon. What even is colcannon? Colcannon happens to be my favourite of the lot—how can you go wrong with butter-toasted kale mixed into creamy mashed potatoes?
6 Creative Uses for Leftover Mashed Potatoes
In my opinion, one of the best things about any large holiday meal is the leftovers that get tucked into the fridge for another day’s dinner. I’m always thinking about how I can cook once in order to eat twice, and there’s no need to wait for the holidays. I often intentionally make too much food in order to guarantee I’ll have a little left behind for another day.
Baked Birthday Cake Donuts
One of my boys isn’t too keen on birthday cake, which means I usually need to come up with an alternative dessert on which to display his birthday candles. In the past, I’ve made Nutella brownies and ice cream sundaes, but this year I think I might gives these adorable baked birthday cake donuts a go. Even if your child happens to love cake, these would be a great addition to any party you may be throwing, or you could make them for a classroom celebration as an alternative to cupcakes.
7 Ways to Not Hate Valentine's Day
Do you really hate Valentine’s Day? Probably? And yes, February 14 is impossible to ignore. And while society has done an exceptional job of convincing us the day should be about chocolate, cute couples going on dates, and romantic love, we could choose to approach the day a little differently this year, because there is another way of looking at it. Instead, what if we focused on the love we have for everyone in our lives, ourselves included?
How to Make a Heart-Shaped Cake
I’m a big fan of celebration cakes, but I prefer not to stock my cupboards with specialty cake pans and tools I may only use once or twice in the course of my cooking career. I’m sure you don’t feel much differently, which is why I’d like to share some simple tutorials on how to make themed cakes without the use of one-time baking pans or complicated kitchen tools.
Savvy Super Bowl Snacks
Hot on the heels of the winter holidays comes the Super Bowl, one of the year’s most exciting sporting events according to all the boys in my house. They see it as a day to lounge in front of the TV with their friends, devouring lots of ‘manly food’ and Super Bowl snacks like chicken wings, pizza, and root beer. In past years we would usually end up at a party of some sort, and if we don’t, we have people over to our house instead.

Cauliflower and Potato Latkes Recipe
One of our SavvyMom editors suggested we make latkes for the site this week and, as usual, she was right on the money with her idea. Just to be clear, I’m not Jewish, which means I had to research how to make these instead of working with a latkes recipe inherited from my Bubbie. I hope I’ve done them justice. Like so many traditional holiday foods, latkes are very simple to make in their most basic form. But, like all modern cooks, I’ve jazzed them up a bit with the addition of cauliflower.
Colourful Winter Salad with Brussels’ Sprouts, Clementines and Pomegranates
Last week I was craving something fresh and turned to my crisper for inspiration. I found the perfect winter salad in the form of bibb lettuce, radicchio, and shaved Brussels sprouts tumbled together in a bowl with roasted beets, clementine segments, and pomegranate seeds. When topped with chopped pistachios and crumbled feta, and drizzled with a tangy clementine vinaigrette, it looked like Christmas had landed on my plate in the form of a healthy, hearty, and nutritious salad.
6 Quick & Easy Dinner Ideas for the Busy Holiday Season
The hustle and bustle of the holiday season doesn’t leave much time for making warm and nourishing meals at the end of a long day, does it? It doesn’t matter how many hours you log at work or in the kitchen baking holiday treats, you’re still left with children, spouses, partners and maybe even parents who need and expect a decent dinner. Before you serve your family a meal of leftover eggnog and broken cookies—it’s been done before, trust me—try one of these quick and easy dinner ideas.
Holiday Baking Cookie Hacks
As much as I love holiday baking, I’m also a realist and know that not everyone (myself included) has the time to make every holiday cookie recipe they’ve bookmarked or pinned in the past month. In fact, it’s pretty easy to give store-bought sweets a merry makeover by dipping them in chocolate and sprinkling on fun toppings and the following tips, twists, and time-savers will leave you pretty skilled when it comes to the holiday baking cookie hack.
Easy Healthy Instant Pot Chicken Noodle Soup
Are you the proud owner of an Instant Pot? I resisted purchasing one for a few years, because I just wasn’t convinced it could live up to the hype. However, once I decided to take one for a test drive, it’s become a great tool for many things. If you’re wondering what to make, or which recipe you should start with, I’d like to point you in the direction of my foolproof Instant Pot chicken noodle soup.
