COLUMBIA, S.C. — In just a few hours, more than half a million South Carolinians are expected to stop receiving SNAP benefits due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. Brandon Jones, who works at Toliver’s Barbershop, says the shutdown hits hard for families like his. "I have a four-year-old. We do depend on SNAP benefits… you know, it’s bad," Jones said. Jones is one of 556,000 South Carolinians who could lose access to SNAP benefits starting Saturday.

Richland One says school meals will continue despite federal funding uncertainty

COLUMBIA, S.C. — As the federal government shutdown continues, some parents are growing concerned about how it could impact school meals. Richland One Superintendent Dr. Todd Walker sent a letter to families Wednesday, warning that funding for federal child nutrition programs is only guaranteed through October unless Congress restores appropriations. Those programs include the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, and the Summer Food Service Program.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Finger-pointing was on full display at the State House on Wednesday, as the Legislative Audit Council’s 2024 review of SLED’s statewide sexual assault kit tracking system was discussed. The tracking system, created under a 2020 state law, is designed to follow sexual assault kits from collection to testing, allowing survivors and law enforcement to see where each kit is in the process.
