Commentary | Jane Katz Field and John Field: As Bernie said, 'Sit down and negotiate a decent contract'
In a March 24 Letter to the Editor, Rick Cowan asks: “Do the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital (BMH) nurses understand the implications of walking off the job now?” The more correct question Cowan should be asking would be: “Does BMH management understand the implications of failing to bargain in good faith by insisting on draconian takeaways from the nursing and lower paid staff ?” Ask most Windham County folks how they feel about our hospital, Brattleboro Memorial, and they’ll say how much they...
Commentary | Jane Katz Field: Get H433 our of committee and onto the floor of the Legislature
Our brave little state took a big step forward in 2011 with the passage of Act 48, which not only would have provided universal health care but was projected to lower healthcare costs in Vermont (private and public) by $1 billion over a 10 year period. But at the last minute, then-Governor Shumlin pulled the plug on the project in 2014, and it was never financed by the Legislature.
A sham-controlled randomised trial evaluating the safety, acceptability, and efficacy of autonomic neuromodulation using transcutaneous vagal sensory stimulation in uncontrolled hypertensive patients: rationale and study design of the SCRATCH-HTN study
Abstract Background: Despite the broad availability of antihypertensive drugs, approximately 40% of hypertensive patients fail to achieve the recommended blood pressure (BP) levels and may require alternative treatment(s). At present, renal denervation is the only proven non-pharmacological device-based alternative treatment available, but it is a costly, invasive, hospital-based procedure that is unlikely to be widely available.
Commentary | Jane Katz Field: Apartheid is immoral - no exceptions
Each new day brings frightening news about Trump’s authoritarian American expansionism: Greenland, Panama, Canada, and Gaza will “soon be owned by the US.” The President is outrageously violating the dignity and self-determination of people here and around the world. In the face of this, more and more of us feel the need to stand up against Trump’s cruelty and total disregard for human rights.
Commentary | Jane Katz Field: To Congresswoman Becca Balint, on US aid to Israel
I know that you are a loving mother, master history teacher, and a progressive leader. As your constituents, we count on you to take stands that are principled, based in history and science, comprehensive, and ethical. You describe yourself as someone who “has spent her life fighting for people on the margins... who has deep empathy for people on the margins... who is a fierce advocate for justice and equity.” Those words resonate with me and others who know you and what you’ve done.
Jane Katz Field: Medicaid 'unwinding' leaving millions uninsured
A 7-year-old boy, in remission from leukemia and living in Florida, was unable to access potentially life-saving treatments because his insurance coverage was suddenly cut off. This is the face of the government’s cruel cancellation of Medicaid coverage for millions of Americans. What’s behind this nightmare?
Processing the Uvalde Tragedy
The past month in the US has been marked by the same gun violence that has long characterized our country. This week, we again feel the impact of this violence – this time in Uvalde, Texas. As we continue to collectively and individually process the intense grief and anguish that consumes us all, we are also reflecting on the cultures of violence in this country, and the systems that uphold and support them.
Announcing the Visions After Violence Fellowship
With support from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the Texas After Violence Project (TAVP) welcomes applications for our 2021-22 Visions After Violence Fellowship, an opportunity for people who are directly impacted by state violence to advance TAVP’s community-based documentation and archival work mission to cultivate deeper understandings of the impacts of state violence on individuals, families, and communities.

After Pittsburgh, we all must stand together against hate
With profound sorrow and deep outrage, the Maine Council of Churches condemns the anti-Semitic act of hatred and lethal violence perpetrated on the worshiping congregation of Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh and extends our prayers, sympathy, support and solidarity to them and our Jewish siblings here in Maine.
Maine Voices: Punishment shouldn't be used to help people fight hunger, find jobs
From the beginning – as in “In the beginning,” where the texts my tradition holds sacred begin, when God gave human beings a garden to till and animals to care for – work has been part of God’s plan for humanity. Work was not intended to be a punishment then, and it shouldn’t be used as punishment now. On the contrary, work gives humankind an opportunity to be in fellowship with God and share responsibility for creation through good stewardship.
Attitudes about torture
The Maine Council of Churches urges Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King, both of whom serve on the Senate Intelligence Committee, to carefully consider our concerns about torture as they deliberate over appointing a new CIA director. This continues our legacy of steadfast leadership in opposition to all forms of torture and reaffirms our longstanding partnership with the National Religious Campaign Against Torture.
The Book Truck ATX
Like a food truck, but for the mind. We saved a traveling library, and drove it from Houston to North Loop in Austin, Texas. Now, we need your help getting it out of the yard and back on the road. Some vital health care: a new A/C and generator. It's not this truck's first rodeo. It still shows signs of its former lives. We want to give it a new look. It also came with over 2,000 books, and no extra storage.
