The Bigger Economic Story Behind Higher Mortgage Rates
As inflation remains persistent and long-term yields rise, higher rates are changing who can invest, which projects get funded and how we understand money itself. Photo by Kevin Carter/Getty Images Mortgage rates have crossed an uncomfortable threshold again. The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate rose to 7.28 percent this week, its highest level since November 2023, according to Freddie Mac. It was the sixth consecutive weekly increase, and the largest one-week jump in nearly four years.
How Fashion Week Became an Economy of Attention
The runway is becoming less a traditional sales transaction than an investment in future value, as fashion brands compete to turn attention into cultural relevance and demand. Photo by Victor VIRGILE/Gamma-Rapho via Getty Images Every September, the fashion industry performs an economic ritual that can look irrational from the outside. Brands spend enormous sums on venues, sets, models, celebrities, production, public relations and hospitality—and then send a few dozen outfits down a runway.
Globally constrained forest biophysical cooling benefits under rising atmospheric dryness
Abstract Climate change reshapes forest biophysical effects, yet the impact direction and strength remain uncertain. Here we quantify the growing-season land surface temperature between forests and adjacent open land (∆LSTgs) and show contrasting temporal trends in ∆LSTgs across the globe during 2001–2023. Rising vapour pressure deficit (VPD) has emerged as the primary driver of these contrasting trends, surpassing other common climatic factors.
How Personal Injury Claims Intersect with Healthcare Treatment and Medical Documentation in Everyday Patient Care Settings
Personal injury cases begin in healthcare environments where the immediate focus is centered entirely on treating the patient and addressing their medical condition rather than any legal implications. Medical professionals prioritize stabilizing injuries, identifying risks, and delivering appropriate care based strictly on clinical necessity. Every decision is guided by urgency and the need to prevent the condition from worsening.
Evaluating the Influence of Pseudo Tree Crown (PTC) Input Alternatives for Machine Learning and Deep Learning Models on Individual Tree Classification Performance
You are already at the latest version Individual tree classification has a long history of diverse development, with recent trends focusing on the adoption of machine learning and deep learning approaches. A simple and powerful approach that lets the model auto-pilot, but weakens the need for physical characteristic understanding. Over more than a decade of our research, we have focused on establishing a direct representation of individual trees that bridges 2D top-down imagery and true 3D models.
Distinct sub-period trends in tropospheric ozone column over the East Asian outflow region during 1990-2019
Abstract Tropospheric ozone, an important greenhouse gas and pollutant, has increased over East Asia in recent decades. However, how this increase evolves temporally remains unclear. Here, we construct a global tropospheric ozone column (TrOC) dataset based on the Trajectory-mapped Ozonesonde dataset for the Stratosphere and Troposphere (TOST).
The safety margin of small-scale tree cover loss in global fragmented forests
|
Abstract Climatic and anthropogenic disturbances have led to intense small-scale tree cover loss in global forests. However, it remains unclear when forest attributes at a large scale (e.g., 0.05° resolution) will decline in response to such sub-grid (e.g., 30-m) tree cover losses within forest ecosystems.

Enhanced effect of warming on the leaf-onset date of boreal deciduous broadleaf forest - Nature Climate Change
Abstract The leaf-onset date is sensitive to climate warming. It is widely reported that the temperature sensitivity of the leaf-onset date (ST) of deciduous broadleaf forest (DBF) may decrease under dormancy-period warming. However, evidence of how boreal-DBF ST may generally change under dormancy-period warming is still lacking.
Enhanced tropical cyclone precipitation variability is linked to Pacific Decadal Oscillation since the 1940s - Communications Earth & Environment
Abstract Southeastern China is pivotal for understanding tropical cyclone (TC) behavior in the Northwest Pacific, the most active TC basin on Earth. However, short instrumental records limit our knowledge of past tropical cyclone precipitation (TCP) and its response to human-driven warming. Here we combine multi-year monitoring of xylem cell formation with a process-based tree growth model to demonstrate that latewood width in coastal conifers is an effective proxy for TCP.
Livable Futures: Noam Chomsky’s Voltairean Dedication to Truth, by Andrew Benzinger
While A Livable Future Is Possible (Haymarket Books, 2024 / Penguin Books, 2025) may be one of the most timidly worded titles in recent memory, Noam Chomsky’s message—refined but unchanged over his near-century-long career in linguistics and political analysis—remains anything but ambiguous. Contrasting age-dependent leaf acclimation strategies drive vegetation greening across deciduous broadleaf forests in mid- to high latitudes - Nature Plants
Abstract Increasing leaf area and extending vegetation growing seasons are two primary drivers of global greening, which has emerged as one of the most significant responses to climate change. However, it remains unclear how these two leaf acclimation strategies would vary across forests at a large spatial scale.

Pervasive but biome-dependent relationship between fragmentation and resilience in forests - Nature Ecology & Evolution
Abstract The relationship between landscape fragmentation and vegetation resilience is uncertain. Here we use multiple satellite-based tree cover data and vegetation indices to quantify the apparent effects of fragmentation on global forest resilience and potential mechanisms thereof. We measure fragmentation as edge density, patch density and mean patch area of tree cover patches, and measure resilience as one-lag temporal autocorrelation of vegetation indices.

A Modeling Study of the Topographic Effects on Shallow Convective Clouds
1 Introduction Shallow convective clouds (SCCs) refer to the subset of convective clouds whose vertical extents are so small that they do not produce precipitation (Siebesma, 1998). They frequently appear over both the oceans (Warren et al., 1988) and lands (Warren et al., 1986). SCCs can effectively reflect solar radiation, and thereby produce negative radiative forcing to the surface (Berg et al., 2011; Twomey, 1974).
Enzymes are a biological answer to plastic waste
The continued rise in plastic production and consumption over recent decades has led to a staggering accumulation of plastic waste. Continuous efforts are being made to develop a comprehensive solution to better manage this waste, and biology can help. A typical plastic bottle takes up to 450 years to decompose, and with over 1 million of these being purchased globally every minute, single-use plastics pose a significant threat to the environment.
Alive with Possibilities - The Future of Sustainable Plastics and Beyond
As the production and consumption of plastics continues to surge, so too has the accumulation of plastic waste. Most plastics do not break down easily and can take anywhere from a few decades to hundreds of years to decompose naturally. For example, a typical plastic bottle takes up to 450 years to decompose in landfill, and with over 1 million of these being purchased globally every minute, single-use plastics pose a significant threat to the environment.

Stratospheric influence on surface ozone pollution in China - Nature Communications
Abstract Events of stratospheric intrusions to the surface (SITS) can lead to severe ozone (O3) pollution. Still, to what extent SITS events impact surface O3 on a national scale over years remains a long-lasting question, mainly due to difficulty of resolving three key SITS metrics: frequency, duration and intensity. Here, we identify 27,616 SITS events over China during 2015-2022 based on spatiotemporally dense surface measurements of O3 and carbon monoxide, two effective indicators of SITS.

Near-field variability of evaposublimation in a montane conifer forest
1 Introduction Montane forests are a dominant land cover type in the Sierra Nevada range of the western United States (Barbour et al., 1991). Processes that govern snow accumulation and ablation in montane forests are therefore critical for understanding the water cycle, monitoring forest health and forecasting spring runoff (Heckmann et al., 2008; Kirchner et al., 2020; Krogh et al., 2022).
Asymmetric influence of forest cover gain and loss on land surface temperature - Nature Climate Change
Abstract The direct biophysical effects of fine-scale tree cover changes on temperature are not well understood. Here, we show how land surface temperature responds to subgrid gross tree cover changes. We find that in many forests, the biophysical cooling induced by enhanced evapotranspiration due to tree cover gain is greater in magnitude than the warming from tree cover loss.
Stratospheric influences on surface ozone increase during the COVID-19 lockdown over northern China - npj Climate and Atmospheric Science
Abstract Surface ozone increased unexpectedly over northern China during the COVID-19 lockdown (CLD) period (23 January–29 February 2020), which was characterized by vigorous emission reduction. The reasons for this ozone enhancement have been speculated from perspectives of chemical responses to the emissions and meteorology. As known, the processes of natural stratospheric ozone injecting to the troposphere are most active in winter and spring.
