Sangamon County fire departments receive IDNR grants

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) awarded more than $8,000 to two Sangamon County fire departments to pay for equipment and training. Divernon Fire Protection District received $3,944 and Pleasant Plains Rural Fire Protection District received $4,072.48. They were among 73 volunteer fire departments in Illinois to receive a total of $495,000 in federal grants, according to a community announcement.

Local students recognized for America & Me essay contest success

Eighth graders from Petoskey, Harbor Springs and Pellston schools were recently honored as top essayists in the 57th Annual America & Me Essay contest. Joy Thorp was the first place winner at Pellston Middle School for the 57th Annual America & Me Essay contest. They were sponsored by agent Dan Polleys of Farm Bureau Insurance. According to a community announcement, more than 3,000 eighth graders from nearly 200 Michigan schools participated in the contest.
