Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I was an overnight assignment editor at WISN-TV in Milwaukee while I was in college, anchoring 26 second news updates on the hour!

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I have! I used to be a secretary for a dentist.

How is social media changing news?

It allows deeper connections to people closer to the stories we cover. It gives reporters instant feedback on their work: good and bad.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I was a general news reporter and then I wrote a political column. It was as hard-hitting as you might expect.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Read! Follow the news! Follow local journalists on Twitter, not just the big national names.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Between 7am-9am Central Time.
