(WALA) - Tropical moisture will significantly enhance rainfall across the Gulf Coast this week, with Thursday emerging as the most dangerous day for severe weather and flooding. Meteorologists have declared Thursday a STORMtracker ALERT Day due to the potential for severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, coastal flooding and hazardous surf conditions. MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A number of significant hurricanes has struck the Gulf Coast in history, with several storms standing out for their impact on the region. Hurricane Frederic struck Dauphin Island in Mobile County in 1979 as a category 4 storm. The system brought 12 to 15 feet of storm surge to area beaches. Nearby storms with major impacts Some of the worst storms that have hit or affected the area made their direct impacts just to the west or east.

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - This is your week to hit the beach or pool. Temperatures will stay very warm through Thursday, with rain chances low and plenty of sunshine expected. Tonight, temperatures will drop to the mid-70s as any showers fade after sunset. Wednesday and Thursday will bring more sunshine than clouds, with daytime highs around 90°. These are ideal conditions to spend time outdoors — just don’t forget the sunscreen. The UV index will be very high, so reapply frequently.
