1. Introduction Mental disorders are a major contributor to the global burden of disease [1]. The greatest proportion of this burden corresponds to depressive disorders which, in Spain, affect about 5% of the general population. In this country, its incidence, disabling effects and the costs involved are increasing [1,2]. However, the adequate management of depression is hampered by the uncertainty surrounding its pathogenesis [1] and, more fundamentally, its conceptualization.
