DULUTH — From its origin in 2022 as a hastily organized gathering at Gichi-Ode' Akiing, Duluth's Trans Joy Fest has grown to become a major regional celebration. "Now to be at year five and having multiple teams of people helping us to make this event happen is just so magical and exciting," said vendor coordinator Kia Ronning.

'Duluth's front yard' reopens after $3 million renovation

DULUTH — The grounds in front of the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center, a focal point of Duluth's tourist trade, ceremonially reopened Thursday after a yearlong renovation led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The $3 million improvement to what speakers at a ribbon-cutting referred to as "Duluth's front yard" increases the area's accessibility with wide paths connecting to the North Pier walkway. The rebuilt lakeshore also has stronger protections against storms and erosion.

Duluth exhibit marks centennial of artist-activist Jean Birkenstein Washington

DULUTH — Jean Birkenstein Washington was simply called "Jean" by everyone, including her children. "One time I said, 'Mommy ... I mean, Jean,'" remembered her son Robin Washington. "She said, 'You can call me Mommy.' I said, 'No, you're Jean.'" Jean (1926-2003) would have turned 100 this year, and the centennial is being marked by exhibits of her paintings both in Duluth and in her home city of Chicago.
