Rok pandemie - Jeff Carlson
iPhone 18 Pro Max can't make a call on AT&T? Apple says it will replace it for free
Some owners of Apple's new iPhone 18 Pro Max may be enjoying the new camera system and improved battery life . But if they're AT&T customers, they could find the phone unable to perform its most essential task: making calls. That also includes being able to dial 911 in emergencies. The fix appears to be a pair of Apple updates rolling out on Friday – but anyone who has already been affected by the problem will need a replacement phone, according to Apple.
T-Mobile is the first carrier to support Apple's iPhone handoff, but it'll cost $5 a month
The new iPhone Handoff feature in iOS 27 is a clever idea: If you have two iPhones , you can use either one with a single phone number — the system automatically activates your number on whichever phone is unlocked. And like Apple's Handoff to Mac and iPad, your texts, calls, voicemails and Find My location follow you, too. At launch, however, the feature is supported only by T-Mobile in the US, and the carrier is charging $5 a month to use it.
Can Google boost Pixel photos with AI horsepower, not gimmicks?
If Google's Pixel line of phones is best known for anything, it's impressive software that elevates the photos its cameras capture. This year's Made By Google event , which kicks off at 6 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Aug. 12, will likely see the Pixel 11 phones shown off — a standard, Pro, and Pro XL version most likely — along with the next Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold. Rumors also point to a Pixel Watch 5. And everything will likely get a good dose of Gemini AI.

150 Years After the First Phone Call, We're Still Looking for 1-on-1 Connections
My interview with William Caughlin, the head of AT&T Archives and History Center, started with an ironic twist. Our Microsoft Teams video call failed, so we ended up talking over the “regular” phone. Perhaps “regular” isn’t entirely accurate, given the infrastructure. But it was fitting for the topic of our conversation: the very first phone call, which occurred exactly 150 years ago.
Just What Is Mobile World Congress (MWC), Anyway?

Read it here: Remove All the Things: Using modern software to erase pesky objects.
Filling Out Your Cookbook Shelves with ckbk
I’ve found myself in a micro-niche over at TidBITS: the guy who writes about online cookbook recipe services. Last year I wrote about Eat Your Books, which includes an index of around 120,000 cookbooks. The catch is that EYB does not include the recipes themselves. The idea is that you can use its search engine to find ingredients or recipes in books you already own, get the page number, and know exactly in which book you’ll find it.
PhotoActive #141 - You Say You Want a Resolution
Camera resolution is easy, right? More pixels, more quality, more options, more better! But as soon as you start digging into it, from the iPhone 14 Pro’s 48 megapixels to Sony sensors with 60 megapixels, all sorts of considerations make themselves known. Do you need that much resolution? How did we survive with less than 20 MP in the recent past? In the latest episode of the PhotoActive podcast, we pixel-peep and also look at the big picture.
Filling Out Your Cookbook Shelves with ckbk
I had been neglecting my cookbooks. Instead of savoring the richness of recipes bound together with beautiful photography and stories of how food affects the people preparing and presenting it, I turned to quick Web searches for recipes of random provenance. Convenience had become my priority, and I felt guilty about it. Then I discovered Eat Your Books , a website that provides a searchable database of printed cookbooks.
PhotoActive #140 - Denoise and Healing Tools
A new episode of the PhotoActive podcast is up! Adobe added a new AI-assisted denoise feature to Lightroom and a Remove tool in the public beta of Photoshop, both of which are impressive. But how many photographers find themselves using these and other tools?
33 Years of TidBITS: Handcrafted Content from Humans
33 years. That's how long I've been publishing TidBITS, starting in April 1990. Last year was the closest I've come to shutting TidBITS down, but with changes that came late in the year, I'm more enthused about TidBITS than I have been in quite some time. Here's why.
PhotoActive #138: DPReview and AI
For the most recent PhotoActive podcast episode, Kirk and I had an entirely different topic in mind, but then the real world intruded just before we hit the Record button. DPReview announced that Amazon is shutting it down after 25 years of operation (which has since been delayed as the site winds down), and Adobe announced the beta of Firefly, its Generative AI service. We talk about what these two things mean for photographers.
DPReview Shuttered
Like many people on Tuesday, I was shocked to learn that DPReview is being shut down by its parent company Amazon. I’ve had the honor of working with DPReview (Digital Photography Review) since 2017, and count some of the people who’ve worked there as friends.
Amazon Shutters Photo Resource Website DPReview
The wording of the announcement suggests that the site's content and forums will be deleted at some point after the "limited period" following the April 10th shutdown; when I reached out to verify that interpretation, DPReview Editor Dale Baskin said he didn't yet know what will happen. A separate source told me that the site's engineers have been working to make the site exportable and coordinating with the Internet Archive to preserve the content.
Bring Back (?) the Noise: A Contrarian Take on DxO PureRAW 3
[This post first appeared in Photo AI, my newsletter about how computational photography is fundamentally changing photography as we know it. Subscribe here, or view the archives at Photo-AI.com.] I’m going to be a contrarian today, in a specifically picky way. You may have seen that DxO this week released DxO PureRAW 3, the latest version of its pre-processing software that uses AI to improve raw files.
PhotoActive 137: Zoom Lenses with Chris Niccols
I remember when I bought my first interchangeable lens camera, two questions loomed above everything else: Should I get a zoom lens or a prime, and should I shoot in raw or JPEG? It made sense to get a zoom with lots of range—people were raving about 18-200mm models at the time—but did I want something large and possibly heavy? Would the relatively slow apertures be a detriment?
Photocombobulate #28: Imposter Syndrome
When we interviewed the wonderful Julieanne Kost in episode 27, Mason and I were both surprised to hear her admit to feeling like an imposter in her chosen field. That struck a chord with us, as we both often deal with imposter syndrome in our work and our photography.
