IMPORTANCE: Screening adolescents in emergency departments (EDs) for suicidal risk is a recommended strategy for suicide prevention. Comparing screening measures on predictive validity could guide ED clinicians in choosing a screening tool. OBJECTIVE: To compare the Ask Suicide-Screening Questions (ASQ) instrument with the Computerized Adaptive Screen for Suicidal Youth (CASSY) instrument for the prediction of suicidal behavior among adolescents seen in EDs, across demographic and clinical strata.

As the second leading cause of death, suicide is responsible for approximately 20% of deaths in the US each year among youths aged 10 to 24 years, and rates have increased more than 50% over the prior 2 decades.

Recency of Suicide Attempt, Ideation, and Reattempt in the Emergency Department: Managing Youth With a Past Attempt

The relationship between suicide attempt (SA) and ideation recency and reattempt has not been examined among pediatric emergency department (ED) patients. Pediatric ED patients are at greater risk of reattempting suicide if they report a SA from the past 3 months, or suicidal ideation (SI) from the past 24 h. Pediatric patients with a past SA from over 1 year ago may be considered at lower risk of reattempt if they also deny recent SI.
