What was your first job as a journalist?
At 15, I was hired by the hometown weekly to cover highschool sports. Pay was 20-cents a column inch. A terrible way to learn reporting.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I spent 15 years on a 1944 Royal that weighed 10lbs. Some people have pets.
How is social media changing news?
Citizen reporters are a double-edged sword. Immediacy is great. Disregard for the truth is extremely dangerous.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
If you take it seriously, you are documenting the truth.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
With one sentence that will grab my attention and a phone number so, if I am interested, I can ask all the necessaries.
What's your favorite social network?
The lost art of face to face.
Why did you become a journalist?
I never did. I started as a writer (who did journalism) and have since promoted myself to storyteller (who writes anything).
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Yes. I reported, and wrote a column. The cheerleaders still preferred the football players.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
It is always the next one.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Learn how to find a story, learn how to report it, then write it out loud. Listen to yourself. You'll hear where it's right and wrong.
